Claudia Ida Sowell

Claudia Chambers Sowell, 83, passed away on July 14, 2025 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Claudia was born April 5,1942 in Abilene, Texas. She attended public schools in Abilene and Odessa, Texas, and graduated from Odessa High School in 1959. She completed her education at Abilene Christian College and was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature Summa Cum Laude in 1963. She married David S Sowell, III on July 13, 1963 in Odessa. Following her graduation and her marriage, she began a lifelong career as homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother. She taught English at Irving High School in Irving, Texas, while her husband was a medical student. She then followed him as he completed his training and military service. First to Birmingham, Alabama, where she worked in the Personnel Department of the US Pipe Company, then to Shawnee, Oklahoma, and finally to Dallas where they lived for 46 years until their move to Tulsa in 2015. Claudia was a member of the Church of Christ from her baptism at age 10 until her death. She was a member of the Prestoncrest Church of Christ in Dallas, for 42 years and served in many roles. She made 17 trips to Guatemala as part of the Prestoncrest medical mission to the Guatemalan people. She served as a Bible School Teacher and a long-time instructor in the church's FriendSpeak ministry. In the Friendspeak ministry she assisted people who were new to America as they improved their English through study of the Bible. She hosted many of these people in her home and made lifetime friendships with them. She prepared food for many who were ill and for families who had lost loved ones. She began a ministry of visitation to older and disabled women and continued this ministry after her move to Tulsa. In Tulsa she was a member of the Park Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband David S Sowell MD of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughters Laura Caroline Sowell Dennis and husband Brent Dennis MD of Tulsa and Elizabeth Ann Sowell of Tempe, Arizona; grandchildren Zane David Dennis of Nashville Tennessee, Ethan Woods Dennis of Los Angeles, California, and Abigail Caroline Dennis of Tulsa; brother William Henry Chambers, Jr. MD and wife Virginia Chambers of Tyler, Texas, and sister Marjorie Chambers Rozell and husband Andy Rozell of Harlingen,Texas. Her Memorial Service will be at the Park Church of Christ Chapel in Tulsa at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 25, 2025. A graveside service is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 26 at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas. A reception will follow at 2:00-4:00 PM at the Prestoncrest Church of Christ, 12700 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75230.
