September 19, 1929 - October 2, 2020
LaFleura D. Owens was welcomed into the arms of Christ her Lord on October 2, 2020. LaFleura Colleen was born on September 19, 1929 in Drumright, OK, to Preston and Colleen Deshan. When she was twelve, the family, which had grown to include sisters Jo and Sherry, and brother Preston, moved to Tulsa. After graduating from Will Rogers High School, she attended Oklahoma Baptist University on a full scholarship, where she received a B.A. in English. Her sense of adventure led LaFleura to California after college. After several years living in Long Beach, CA, she returned to Tulsa, OK, where her first son, Mike, was born. She later met and married Jim Owens, her beloved and faithful husband of 56 years. They raised their family in Tulsa, which grew to include three daughters, Kerry, Nancy and Holly, and son, Jeff. LaFleura was not only a loving, devoted, and patient wife and mother; she was an excellent gourmet cook and seamstress. She was an expert bridge player, and enjoyed hosting bridge parties at home with Jim. Like her husband Jim, who received an M.S. in Petroleum Engineering at The University of Tulsa, she decided to pursue a graduate degree at TU, and earned her Juris Doctorate in 1978. LaFleura practiced law for a few years on a part-time basis, fitting it around what she enjoyed most - being a wife and mother. For years, she sewed Halloween costumes, made birthday cakes, read stories, had tea parties with her daughters, made dinner, and tucked her children in every night. She faithfully attended and enjoyed hockey games, soccer games, piano recitals, school plays, her daughters' ballet performances and horse shows. After their children were grown, she and Jim moved to Durango, CO where they enjoyed many years and new friendships. They moved to Oklahoma City, OK shortly after their grandchildren were born, and continued to enjoy many trips back to their second home in Colorado. Anyone who knew LaFleura admired her powerful intellect and prodigious vocabulary. One of her most wonderful qualities was her ability to converse with depth and fluency about many subjects including literature, history, art, opera, ballet, cooking, geography, science, sports, and current events. She also loved travel. In addition to trips with Jim and her children, she always looked forward to her annual month-long trips to Zurich, Switzerland, where one of her daughters lived and worked. She was a bibliophile, and always had a book she was reading; but was always ready to set it aside if you needed to talk, or needed help with anything. LaFleura was loving, kind, wise, generous-spirited, and humble. Above all, she was a woman of abiding faith; she exemplified 1 John 3:18: "Dear children, let us not love in word only, but in deed and truth." LaFleura is profoundly loved, and will be profoundly missed. Most of all, she will be cherished through the many life lessons and precious memories she leaves for her family, and her friends. LaFleura was predeceased by her husband Jim, and her sisters Jo and Sherry. She is survived by her children Mike, Kerry (Andy), Nancy, Holly, and Jeff (Carol), her brother Preston, seven grandchildren, five great-grandsons, three great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family is deeply appreciative of the loving and expert care given to LaFleura by Julie Akers and her compassionate staff at Oklahoma Methodist Manor, during the final year of her life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Oklahoma Methodist Manor, 4134 East 31st Street, Tulsa, OK 74135. A Memorial Service celebrating LaFleura's life will be held at 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 7, at Rose Hill Funeral Home Chapel, 4161 E. Admiral Pl., Tulsa, OK. Arrangements: Moore Funeral Home, 918-583-6148; www.moorefuneral.com .
