Obituary

Ada Mae Barnett, 90, died Thursday, April 8, 2021.
She was born July 5, 1930 to Huey Katherine and Elmer Orville Douglas of Gravette, AR, the third of 4 daughters.

She graduated from Gravette High School in 1948 and the University of Arkansas in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE).

Ada Mae married Gideon F (G.F.) Barnett Jr. on June 22, 1952 and they were married 56 years until G.F.'s death January 13, 2009. Ada is survived by son, David and his wife Jan, of Tulsa, OK; daughter, Rebekah (Becky) Donnelly and her husband Jay and two grandchildren, Claire and Ben of Carlyle, IL as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews .

Ada Mae chose to be a Teacher instead of her first calling to be a Doctor. The world is a better place for her decision to be a Teacher. She taught many a Doctor, Lawyer and Scientist to read and most importantly to "tie their shoe". Ada Mae loved being a teacher which took her to Missouri, Arkansas and finally Oklahoma, retiring from Tulsa Public Schools. She then taught at Riverfield Country Day School where she retired a second time. She was a Founding Member of South Tulsa Baptist Church where she volunteered in the library.

Ada Mae often told a story that she was named after two cows, one named "Ada" and one named "Mae". The rest of the story is these two cows were named after two of her relatives, one named "Ada" and one named "Mae". We will all remember the endearing story of the cows. Ada Mae was a lover of animals and her home was often called a "Zoo". Besides the countless dogs she had there were birds of many species which included parakeets, geese and doves and even a hummingbird she nursed back to health. There were flying squirrels, gerbils and rabbits, just to name a few.

Ada Mae was a loyal "Hogs" fan to the very end. She attended many games throughout the years, listened to the sportscasters on the radio or watched them on television. She would often "Call The Hogs" during the game.

Of the four daughters of Elmer and Huey Douglas, Ada Mae was known as "The Happy One". Ada Mae will be remembered for her kind spirit and loving nature. She was easy to befriend and loved by all that came in contact with her.

The funeral service will be 3:30PM on Friday, April 9, 2021 at Moore Southlawn Chapel, 9350 E 51st St, Tulsa, OK 74145.
