Growing up Alan participated in Scouting, starting at Lindberg Grade school as a Cub Scout advancing to Boy Scout Troop 173. He held several troop leader positions and obtained the highest rank in Scouting "EAGLE SCOUT". During his Scouting tenure Alan worked and taught at various scout summer camps. The major adventure in his scouting life was attending the 1977 National Jamboree held in Pennsylvania. He met, ate and participated in activities with young men from every State in the US and some foreign countries.
His love for cars and the outdoors led to his restoration of a 1967 Ford Mustang and the purchase of a boat led to a weekend home at Whitethorn Cove, then a house in the Poindexter addition, pontoon boat, and lots of fishing with the kids, family cookouts, and Holiday celebrations. Alan and Susan were always at their best at the lake enjoying family, neighbors and the wildlife that would stroll through the addition. Alan especially loved the Wild Turkeys, feeding them every chance he got.
