Obituary

Alfred O. "Al" Oyler
Died Saturday, April 27, 2019, in Tulsa at the age of 97. Al was born May 8, 1921 to Lyle and Laura Oyler in Grove, OK., the third of six children. In 1931 the family moved to Southwest City, MO and shortly after the move his father was tragically killed in a hunting accident. His mother was a strong woman who raised her six children through the difficult times of the Great Depression. Al took on whatever odd jobs and part-time work he could find to help support the family. Anything from mowing yards for a quarter to working the local wheat harvest for $.50 to a $1.00 a day.

At the age of 12 Al joined the Boy Scouts and obtained his Eagle Scout during his senior year in high school. He credited scouting with keeping him on the "straight and narrow" during his youth.

During World War II, Al served in the U.S. Army, 84th Division, 333rd Infantry, "K" Company. Starting in December, 1944, his company fought in the Battle of the Bulge. They continued fighting for two months in the Ardennes until the Germans were pushed back into Germany.

After the war ended, he returned to Southwest City and started dating Billie Prather. They were married on October 12, 1946 in Anderson, MO. In January, 1947 they moved to Tulsa and he started a 35 year career with Mid-Continent, Sunray DX and Sun Oil Company. They remained lifelong Tulsans.

Al and Billie had two children, Rick and Barry. He was devoted to his family and was always willing to volunteer his time to serve as a Little League coach, board member of South Tulsa Baseball, and Scout Master. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Oklahoma. Al was a long time member of Boston Avenue Methodist Church.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle & Laura Oyler, three sisters, Mary Katherine, Margie and Bette, his wife, Billie (2011) and his son Rick (2016). He is survived by his son Barry Oyler (Susan), daughter-in-law Frankie Oyler, grandson Vincent Oyler (Tarin), granddaughters Elizabeth Galegar (Chris), Kristen Fennema (Gary), great-grandson Cooper Galegar, brother Leonard Oyler (Leta) and sister Carole Teel.

The family would like to thank the staff of Montereau and St. Francis Hospice for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Disabled American Veterans.
