Alice Garden Venable Rice was born October 7, 1919 in Millersburg, Kentucky. She went home to be with the Lord March 28, 2015. Alice graduated from Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, North Carolina. She taught math and science before marrying Robert F. Rice in 1946. In 1950, the couple with their two young boys went to Korea as Presbyterian missionaries, arriving six weeks before the start of the Korean War. Fifteen years later, and with three more children, the family moved to Tulsa in 1965. In 1967 Bob and Alice founded Literacy and Evangelism International. LEI is a mission organization dedicated to teaching the illiterate to read the message of Christ. This ministry continues today with Bible content primers (basic readers) in over 200 languages. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her brother Dr. Sidney Venable of Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, sister Leucia Venable of Wilmington, Delaware, and cousin Martha Craig of Fredericksburg, Texas; her children: Willis and his wife Linda, Bob and his wife Bev, Roland and his wife Linda, Alice and her husband David Tubley, Sid and his wife Christa and her grandchildren: Kirstin Farris, Kara Sullivan, and Kimberly Rice, Justin and Wes Rice, Andrew and Peter Tubley, Philip, Daniel and David Rice. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church, 4102 E. 61st St., Tulsa, OK at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 4.
