Almeda Smith went to be with her Lord on December 10, 2017 at the age of 88. She will be remembered as a loving wife to Jerome Smith, Tulsa; as a loving mother to Drs. Douglas and Marjorie Smith, Anchorage, Alaska; Dr. Evelyn Roberts, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Carolyn and Steve Webster, Garland, Texas; Daniel and Vicki Smith, Edmond, Oklahoma; a loving grandmother to Laurie Smith; David (wife Jessica), Emily, and Christopher (wife Lindsey) Roberts; Kristina Webster; JD (wife Jill) Webster; Jenny (husband Steve) Cooper, and Laura Smith; and great-grandmother to Ava, Owen, and Hudson Cooper, Alexis Roberts, Giuliana Velasquez Smith, and Cora Roberts. She and Jerome were members of the New Covenant Sunday School Class at Boston Methodist Church for over fifty years.
Almeda was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lena Stiverson of Miltonvale, Kansas; a brother Verle Stiverson, Branson, Missouri; and sisters: Levona Hobb, Lena, Illinois; Bernice Blomberg, Clay Center, Kansas; and Lillie Wade, Phoenix, Arizona.
Almeda attended the Wesleyan Methodist Academy for two years, receiving three years of credit. She then graduated as salutatorian from DeSoto, Kansas High School; and With Honors from The University of Tulsa with degrees in Sociology and Education. She taught three years at Taft Elementary School in Tulsa; she held the positions of Assistant Professor of Education and Director of the Mabee Reading Clinic at the University of Tulsa for twenty-nine years. She further served the University in the following positions: Secretary, Vice-President, and President of the College of Education Faculty; Coordinator of the Graduate Reading Program; and as faculty advisor for Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary society in Education. She also served as President for the following honor societies: Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology), Phi Gamma Mu (Social Studies) and Kappa Delta Pi (Education).
Almeda served local and state educational programs in the following positions: President of the Tulsa County Reading Council, President of the Oklahoma Higher Education Reading Council, and delegate to the Oklahoma State Reading Council. As an advisor to the Learning Research Center at the Lemley Campus in Tulsa, she was a strong advocate for the Tulsa Area Vocational-Technical School.
After retiring from the University of Tulsa, she and her husband resided in Tulsa during the winter, and in their mountain cabin in Florissant, Colorado, during the summer. Spring and Fall months were spent traveling in their motorhome.
Almeda's greatest joy in life was hosting family gatherings during the holiday seasons.
