Anne Dowell Barry, age 84, died peacefully on November 17, 2014 at St. Simeon's, her home. Anne Elizabeth Dowell was born in Montgomery, Alabama on March 9, 1930 to Horace Bartlett Dowell and Annie Ruth Kendall Dowell. The family moved to Tulsa in 1937. Anne graduated from Tulsa Central High School then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, graduating in 1952.
Anne returned to Tulsa after college and worked as a social worker until she married John E. Barry in 1954. They raised four children, Kathleen, Margaret, Alison, and David. As a mother and later as a grandmother, Anne was truly gifted. She had plenty of energy and good ideas for family activities. Anne was also athletic and loved skiing, tennis, horseback riding, canoeing, and camping. She planned many fun family outings and trips usually involving the outdoors, fresh air, and physical activity.
As a girl, Anne was fearless. Her three older brothers would dare their friends to try risky stunts with the promise that, "even our little sister can do that." If the stories can be believed, Anne always gave it a good effort.
When her children were nearly grown, Anne embarked on a new career as a preschool teacher at Channing Day School. In teaching, Anne found her true calling. She planned field trips for the "five-day-a-weekers" and together they discovered the wonders of Tulsa.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, brothers Spider, John, and Charlie, sisters-in-law Irene Dowell, Betty McInnis, and Kathleen Parker, and brother-in-law Charles Barry. She is survived by her children Kathleen Barry Plumb and husband Charlie, Margaret Barry, Alison Barry Hicks, and David Barry, grandchildren Joe Plumb, Nora Plumb, Catherine Hicks, John Hicks, and Madeline Hicks, sisters-in-law Betty Dowell, Pat Dowell, and Elizabeth Barry, and many nieces and nephews.
Anne, you brightened our days with your kind spirit, happy outlook, good ideas for fun and adventure, your easy laugh, and green chili stew. You will be forever missed. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Simeon's Episcopal home, St. Francis Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
