Obituary

Art Justis, a five-term Tulsa city councilor who was best
known for his focus on public works and capital improvements,
died Thursday of cancer. He was 72.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at
Moore's Southlawn Funeral Home. A service is set for 2
p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

A Democrat, Justis reprsehted District 6 from 1995 to 2004.
City Council Chairman David Patrick said Justis was
a mentor to him, as we11 as a beloved colleague and friend.

"Art was a phenomenal servant and always held him-self
to the highest echelon to serve the citizens of Tulsa,
both on and off the City Council. It was truly an honor
to be under (his) leadership," Patrick said.

Justis was well-known for being a fixture on the city's
Public Works Committee, which was a passion of his
and which he led before the advent of committee chairmanship
rotation. In that post, he helped guide city capital improvements,
including several third-penny sales tax and street initiatives.
Among projects he was instrumental in were the widening
of129th East Avenue to five lanes and the completion
of major stormwater management upgrades.

Current District 6 Councilor Skip Steele said Justis "will
be truly missed, but his lively spirit will always live on. Art
was a diligent leader who worked methodically to make
Tulsa a better place for all."

A longtime east Tulsa resident, Justis was the owner of
Metro Data Processing Inc. Before he was elected to
the council, he served for three years on the city's Sales
Tax Overview Committee. Justis' survivors include
his wife, Sandra Justis; a daughter, Janelle Potter;
two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
