Arthur Irving Shurtleff, 87, retired Sales Engineer for Rockwell Manufacturing Co. and a member of a pioneer Tulsa family, was found dead Wednesday, December 20, 1978, at his home at 216 S. Jamestown Ave., Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born in Arkansas City, Kansas on July 28, 1891 to Victor Irving and Anna Mariah Williams Shurtleff. Arthur came to Tulsa with is parents at the age of two weeks old. He was in the cattle business in and around the Tulsa area from 1915-21, riding cattle trails from Texas to Nebraska. Arthur was employed by the City of Tulsa Water Department from 1921-28. He joined Rockwell Manufacturing Co. in 1935 and was employed by the company for 21 years before his retirement in 1956. His father, the later Victor Irving Shurtleff, was one of Tulsa's earliest pioneers. He was an early-day cattleman and rancher and member of the first city council and first boards of education. Arthur was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, longtime member of the Tulsa Historical Society, Rock Masonic Lodge and the First Christian Church. He was also active in the Southwest Water Works Association.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline Mae Presley Shurtleff, of the home (who died in 1984); a daughter, Mrs. Stewart (Dorothy) Frederick of Kuwait; brother, Floyd George Shurtleff of Langley, Oklahoma (died in 1985); two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Mildred Leota) Shurtleff Wandres (died in 1991) and Mrs. Anna Marie Shurtleff Martin Dickerson (died in 1997), both of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Mrs. David G. (Linda) Mixon of Sunnyvale, California, Mrs.Timothy (Carolyn) Walls of Corvallis, Oregon; and one great-grandson, Robert Stewart Milton Cross of Corvallis, Oregon. He was preceded in death by brother, Charles Victor Shurtleff (died in 1975); and two sisters, Velma H. Shurtleff (died in 1903), and Eva Shurtleff (died in 1904).
