Obituary

Wilson, Barbara Sue, 79, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born November 8, 1941 in Keota, Oklahoma to Riley D. and Dema M. (McElroy) Wilson.

Barbara was a member of Garnett Church of Christ and later, Park Church of Christ.

Barbara started her long distinguished career, receiving a bachelor of science in elementary education and English at Connors State College, a masters of elementary education from NE State University, a major in administration and elementary education from OSU, and a major in administration and early childhood from University of Tulsa.

Barbara began her career with Tulsa Public Schools in 1963 at Alice Robertson Elementary. She became coordinator of summer Head Start, elementary curriculum specialist-inner city school, supervisor and coordinator for Project Read, principal Peary Elementary, instructional coordinator special education, assistant director special education, TPS. After retiring from TPS, Barbara joined Metro Christian Academy as director of special services and operations.

Some of Barbara's consultant services are as follows: Bilingual program, NE State, Oklahoma; Association of Supervisors and Curriculum Development, St. Louis; Open Education Kettering Foundation Durham NH; ASCD San Francisco; inclusion workshop, Mayo Demonstration School. She planned and developed the team teacher center at Tulsa Public Schools.
Barbara received the honor: Outstanding Young Women of America in 1972.

Barbara served on the Executive Board Tulsa District P.T.A., was President of the Board of Directors Tulsa Association for Learning Disability, served on the Mayors Community Relations Committee, was a member of Southland Civitan Club, United Way executive budget committee and Chairman United Way Allocation Panel.

Even with all her accomplishments and activities, Barbara found time for family and she put God first in her life. She was a loving daughter, sister and aunt.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Dema Wilson; sister Erma Jean Bilyeu; brother-in-law, Earl Bilyeu; brother Bobby R. Wilson; nephew, Riley Wilson; and grandnephew, Jonathan Bilyeu. She is survived by sister-in-law Lana Wilson of Tulsa; nieces and nephews, Larry (Debbie) Bilyeu of Greenwood, AR, Lana Jean (Bill) Pence of Barling, AR and Demyree (Matthew) Vetera of Broken Arrow; several great-nieces and nephews, Angie Maxwell of Tulsa, Jeremiah (Kendra) Maxwell of Poteau, Charity (Colby) Fingerhut of Pea Ridge, AR, Jasmine Hayes of Broken Arrow, OK, Garron Hayes of The Colony, TX; great-grandniece, Maci Maxwell; great-grandnephews, Bryar Bilyeu and Callen Fingerhut; and long-time friend, Jim Campbell.

A memorial visitation will be on Wednesday 2-7 PM at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, 9350 E. 51st St, Tulsa. A graveside service will be on Thursday, June 17,2021 10:30 AM at Keota Cemetery, Keota, OK.

Barbara loved her family, and loved God above all.
