Maribeth C. Gibbons, 86, died on January 11, 2016. "Beth" was born in Chicago on May 23, 1929 to James J. and Agnes F. Carey. She graduated with a degree in English from Mundelein College in 1952 where she was an editor of the college newspaper, Skyscraper. On May 31, 1952, she married her sweetheart, William J. Gibbons Jr. Beth and "Bill" were soon relocated from Chicago to Fort Sill, OK where Bill was stationed for the Korean War. During this time, Beth taught reading skills to personnel and had their first son.
After the war, the family moved back to Chicago where Beth had her three daughters. They were then relocated to Dallas, where their second son was born. In 1967, the family finally settled in Tulsa. Beth began her twenty-year career at Tulsa Public Schools as a remedial reading teacher at Hamilton, Bell, and Nimitz Junior High. She found this work both enjoyable and very rewarding. Beth and Bill had been married for 57 wonderful years when he passed away on December 21, 2009. She was an avid reader and shared her love for literature with her children, grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.
Beth and Bill were active volunteers and parishioners of St. Pius X Catholic Church where they were part of the committee for feeding the homeless. Beth also was an extraordinary Eucharistic minister for the homebound, a ministry she loved. She also loved traveling with her many friends and family, swimming with her grandchildren, and golfing with her husband.
Beth was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her five children: William J. III and Dee Ann Gibbons of Tulsa, Kathryn Gibbons of Denver, Jane Gibbons and Dan Epstein of Chicago, Maribeth and William Clark of Tulsa, and Jim and Jennifer Gibbons of OKC; six grandchildren, Andrew and James Silvey of Denver, Theodore Gibbons of Tubingen, Germany, Patricia and Seth Barton of Tulsa, and Audrey and Benjamin Clark of Tulsa; and two great-granddaughters, Danielle and Natalie Barton.
Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8PM, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Moore's Southlawn, 9350 E. 51st, Tulsa, OK. A funeral mass will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, January 14, 2016 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1727 S. 75th E. Ave., Tulsa, OK.
Memorial donations may be made to Jesuit International Missions, 2050 North Clark St., Chicago, IL 60614 with the mention "For Fr. Jack Kenealy's Orphans". Fr. Jack is Beth's dear cousin and a Jesuit mission priest in Patna, India.
