Betty Maybelle "Bitty Cat" Fox Calhoun
Entered this world on July 30, 1923 and entered into heaven on Friday October 16, 2020. She was born in her grandparents home on their farm about a mile from her parents family farm in Corum, Oklahoma. She was a country girl at heart and a stylin' sophisticated work of art. When 15 years old she and her family moved to the big city of Oklahoma City, attended high school there and helped out at her family's boarding house. She graduated from Central High School. While making one of many trips to a small neighborhood bakery that supplied goods for the boarding house she caught the eye of a handsome young man named John Howard Calhoun who immediately became smitten with her. They married on January 3, 1943 and had a Camelot love affair until the day that her precious Johnny and our Dad and Grandpa passed away 67 years later.
Johnny served in the 82nd Airborne Division in WW II and was a decorated Purple Heart recipient. In 1949 Betty and Johnny moved to Tulsa and raised their family there. We were so fortunate to have such beautiful examples of true love. Their Christian values and faith were our guiding light!
In OKC Betty worked at Tinker Field delivering classified messages. She then worked as a telephone operator until her and Johnny's move to Tulsa. In later years she was a pre-school teacher, a job she loved most. Mom, Granny, Gammy, Granma and Great GG was our Mentor, our Friend, our Advocate, our Teacher and ever present Cheerleader.
Betty was a lifelong Methodist and was always active in her church. She loved the Lord! She loved family get togethers. She was a fantastic cook and could grille on her trusty Hasty Bake with the best of them.
Betty was predeceased by her beloved Johnny, her parents David Earl and Lora Mary (Vanblair) Fox, brother and sister-in-law Glen and Eddie Fox, and sister and brother-in-law Gayle and Leroy Townsend. She is survived by daughter Judy Calhoun (Michael) Skaistis, son Don (Lisa) Calhoun and son Fred (Nita) Calhoun, Granddaughters Lora (Marty) Cloyd, Tami Golden, Rachelle Calhoun, Katy (David) Becker, Emily Calhoun and Grandson Jon-Michael Skaistis. She also leaves five great grandsons and three great granddaughters, special nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Many Thanks to the Burgundy Place Retirement Center in Tulsa for making her final years such a joyful experience. Special thanks to Shondel, Denice, Sonya and Sharon. You all are the BEST!
Private family services were held. A Life Celebration will be held at a later date.
