Obituary

Betty Marie Elwood Wortley was born November 6, 1922, in Mooreland, Oklahoma and passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family in Dallas, Texas on December 1, 2021. Her husband Wallace Wortley, her parents, Mary and Thilder Elwood, and her brother, Beryle Elwood, preceded her in death.

Betty's early years growing up on a farm outside of Mooreland, which is close to the Oklahoma panhandle, instilled in her life-long qualities of hard work, determination, and resiliency. Betty moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the mid 1940s where she met Wallace, her future husband, who was in the United States Army. Betty and Wallace married in Tulsa in 1946. They were happily married for 50 years until Wallace's death in 1996.

In Tulsa, Betty worked for many years as an assistant to Robert "Chuck" Earlougher, a petroleum engineer who was a pioneer in the recovery of oil by water injection. We thank the Earlougher family for their kindness to Betty during and after her career with Mr. Earlougher. In Tulsa, Betty was an active member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and was an avid bridge player, participating in multiple bridge clubs well into her mid 90s. She recently moved to Dallas, Texas in order to be closer to family members.

Her greatest passion was her love for her two children, five grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Betty is survived by her children Michael Wortley and wife Tricia and Mitchel Wortley and wife Linda. She is survived by her grandchildren, Phil Wortley and wife Samantha, Lexi Wortley Sonnier and husband Ben, Lora Wortley Hill and husband Kris, Michael Wortley and wife Allison, and Becky Wortley Perez and husband Daniel. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Miller and Suzanna Mae Wortley, Luke, Logan, and Cole Sonnier, Christian, Jacob, Rowan, and Ryann Hill, William and Bennett Wortley, and Reece, Joe, Ellie, Lily, and Peter Perez.

Betty was a very beautiful, loving lady who was loved by all she touched for her wit, kindness, and intelligence.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers she had at the Woodland Terrace in Tulsa and the Ventana in Dallas in her final year.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to John Knox Presbyterian Church, 2929 East 31st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74105, or to a charity of choice.
