Betty G. Young, age 80, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2020 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was a dedicated Wife, Mom, Grandma and a thoughtful homemaker, whose joy was found in God, in family, and in her friends.
Born in Cushing, OK, on April 22, 1940 to Ruth Pearl and Garland Long, Betty spent her early childhood on the family farm in Cushing. She grew up in Tulsa, graduating from Will Rogers High School. She worked as a licensed beautician after graduation, served briefly as a geologist secretary in the 1970s and was co-owner of an automotive business with her husband of 45 years.
Betty's life was committed to serving the needs of others. She was a highly active member of Sequoyah, Berean (where she was a member for over 40 years) and Memorial Baptist churches in Tulsa. Betty created a Sunday School Class for Divorced Singles at Berean and taught the class for 36 years. She was known for her energy and creativity in Mission Friends, VBS, singing in the choir, cooking at Falls Creek, her "Pumpkin Patch" game and overall hospitality.
Anyone who met or knew Betty experienced her spunk, wit, laughter, generous heart, wisdom and conversation! Even the ICU doctor said she was a "spitfire." Betty savored the details of her family's lives and cheered on her grandchildren. Family gatherings included Mexican Train Dominoes, card games, and most recently, she learned how to play foosball. She won. Betty looked forward to a big family reunion and it made her happy to think of everyone being together in one place.
Betty is survived by husband Billy Young, of Tulsa, daughter Christy Blystone and husband Phil, grandchildren Emma and Drew, of Tulsa; sister Sammy Greene and husband James, nephews Jody and Derek, niece Connie Doyle and their families of Grapevine, TX; stepsons Billy Jr. and Claude, grandchildren Christian, Katie, Lance and Matt; sisters-in-law Donna Young and Darla Skirvin and their families; aunts and uncles Jim and Karen Brown, Ethel Brown, Ken and Esther Chowins and extended family members. She is preceded in death by twin daughters at their birth, her dear mother Ruth, biological father Garland, and stepfathers Lynn Combs and J.C. Cox.
Betty found her life's inspiration in the scripture: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)
In lieu of flowers and as a tribute to Betty's demonstrated love for others, please continue to help people in need. If inclined, memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children, Our Daily Bread Ministries or Guideposts.
