William (Bill) Bortz Somers passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Bill was born on a farm near Greensburg, PA. on Sept 22, 1926 to Charles and Elsie (Bortz) Somers. Bill graduated from Latrobe High School in 1945. During WWII, he served two years in the United States Army in the Philippines. Bill was honorably discharged as Staff Sgt. in 1946.
Bill returned to Pennsylvania where he met and married Reita Mae Eckenrod. He graduated from Penn State University in Agricultural Education in 1950. He then taught Vocational Agriculture for four years at Bedford High School in Bedford, PA.
He joined the American Agricultural Chemical Co. in 1954 as a territorial salesman and worked in several marketing managerial positions in East St. Louis, IL, Fulton, IL, Peoria, IL and Tulsa, OK. He retired from Agrico with the Williams Companies in 1986 after 32 years of service.
Bill served as elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Bedford, PA, the First
Presbyterian Church in Clinton, IA and the First Presbyterian Church in Peoria, IL. He was a long-time member of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa. He was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 100 in Clinton IA, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry 32 degree and a member of Akdar Shrine Temple in Tulsa.
Bill served as a hospice volunteer for five years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and reading but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, his wife, Reita; and daughter, Martha Jo Stunkel. Surviving Bill are his son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Cathy of Tulsa, son-in-law, Paul Stunkel of Detroit, Ml, five grandchildren: Tim Stunkel of Mooresville, NC, Christy Ure of Norton, OH, Joy Gaska of Winston-Salem, NC , Kyle Somers of Jackson, WY and Kelly Somers, Tulsa; and seven great-grandchildren. They will all miss their Pap.
Family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2448 E. 81st, Ste. 300, Tulsa, OK 74137.
