Camilla Dean Underwood Schmitt, 91, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born January 14, 1926 in Gracemont, Oklahoma to the late William Burton and Ethel (Hardy) Underwood. Camilla was a graduate of Gracemont High School. She worked as an armor plate arc welder in the shipyards of Long Beach, California during World War II, where she met her late husband, Orion Schmitt. The family moved several times, finally settling in Tulsa, where she worked as a sales clerk for a number of department stores.
Camilla was known for her baking skills and was the maker of birthday cakes, Christmas cookies, banana bread and cheesecake. She rarely appeared at a social function without a plate of cookies that, without fail, disappeared quickly. If she gave you a loaf of bread, there was always a slice missing -- for testing purposes. She was a gardener of food and flowers and a killer of dandelions. She had a terrible sense of direction and could get lost in her own neighborhood, but when determined, could drive herself to Colorado to visit her son and grandchildren. She was independent, and lived on her own until just after her 91st birthday. She believed in early to bed, early to rise and the power of a home-cooked meal.
She is survived by sons, Charles Michael Schmitt of 29 Palms, California, William Patrick Schmitt and his wife, Mary Fran of Buena Vista, Colorado; daughter, Margaret Ann Miller and her husband, Jackson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; and son Edward Leo Schmitt and his wife, Barbara of Russellville, Arkansas; sister, Ouida McGinty of Stillwater, Oklahoma; brother, John Tom Underwood of Marlow, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren (Daniel, Linda, Jennifer, Anthony, Amy, Molly, and Rebecca) and six great-grandchildren (Cassandra, Janelle, Katelyn, Brandon, Dylan, and Benjamin).
Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Thursday, June 22, 2017 and the funeral service will be held 2 PM, Friday, June 23, 2017 both at Moore's Southlawn Chapel, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
