Carl Clinton
Ingersol
Aug 26, 1925 — Jun 24, 2026
Carl Clinton Ingersol, devoted son, sibling, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 100 on June 24, 2026 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He was born August 26, 1925, to Charles Clinton Ingersol and Ada Faye Johnson Ingersol in Stillwater, OK. Mrs. Davenport, the neighborhood mid-wife, attended to his birth in the family home. He is reunited with his beloved wife and partner in ministry for 67 years, Lillian Browning Ingersol; sisters, Bessie (Oliver "Buck") Brensing, and Emma (Dr. Robert) Price; brothers John (Fern), Freeman (Evelyn), Henry (Muriel), Dr. Robert (Jacque), and Paul Ingersol; and many beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Carl leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his family: son, Stephen Carl Ingersol (Cindy) of Monument, CO; daughter, Rhonda Ingersol Carr (Greg) of Bartlesville, OK; grandsons, Ryan Ingersol (Skyler Safford) of Bellingham, WA, Colin (Ashley) Ingersol of Norman, OK, and Gabriel (Brianna) Carr of Moore, OK; granddaughters Brenna (Matt) Ingersol Mahon of Idaho Falls, ID, and Avery (Jake) Carr O'Callaghan of Bartlesville; great grandchildren Miles Ingersol and Lowen & Aelyn Mahon; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His role as a father and grandfather was marked by unwavering love, guidance, encouragement, and prayer, shaping lives in profound ways.
Carl Ingersol was born with a pastor's heart. He committed his life to the Lord at a very young age and was called into pastoral ministry during youth revival services at the Stillwater Church of the Nazarene in the 1930's. While a young child, his family moved to a small farm on the outskirts of Stillwater, a homestead with no electricity or phone service, but a team of horses to pull the plow, when they moved to that rural setting. A graduate of both Stillwater High School and Bethany-Peniel College (Southern Nazarene University), Carl finished college in 3 years, where he met the love of his life, Lillian Browning. Married in 1946, they served pastorates in the Church of the Nazarene in Wichita, El Dorado, and Garden City, KS; Dayton, OH; Warr Acres, OK; Ft. Wayne and Greenwood, IN. A fierce advocate for the Church of the Nazarene and the claims of holiness in one's life, Carl was unwavering in his love of his church family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.
Carl obtained a Masters in Personnel Counseling at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Upon retirement from active ministry in the Nazarene Church, Carl found a second ministry by serving the State of Oklahoma as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for 13 years. His many stories of being blessed by the lives of his rehab clients enriched lives as he shared those fulfilling experiences with family and friends.
Carl loved the land: The farm never really left him - and he often sought solace in his garden, where he would sing the words to the hymn "I come to the garden alone...," especially in the years after Lillian's home-going.
He loved his music: The Boys Glee Club at Stillwater High - as he put it, "more glee than Club"; the great hymns and anthems of the Church calling God's Creation to Him; the genius of the great masters that his daughter & son-in-law, Rhonda & Greg, played so beautifully in their orchestras.
Carl loved his family and legacy: His unconditional acceptance of his kids...and their kids; loyalty and pride in his parents and siblings, even through the dark days; daily prayers for nieces and nephews, siblings, aaalll the in-laws; his impish love of pranks and pratfalls. In his book, The Charles Clinton Ingersol Family History, he wrote of his family, "this legacy was hard-won-a legacy of freedom, piety, industry, and patriotism."
Most of all, Carl loved Christ: The embrace of fellow Christians in worship; the companionship of fellow servants in ministry; a shared vision of a higher calling; earnest prayer that the family circle be unbroken; the overtures of the eternal by the Church Triumphant. Gloria Gaither recently observed that "The goodbyes that are so hard to say don't really have to be said. We don't need that word for today. We have learned the veil between here and there is very sheer and it doesn't matter which side of it we are singing on."
As we celebrate the journey of Carl Clinton Ingersol from this world to the next, we celebrate both his legacy and the fruition of the Hope of Heaven. The Ingersol and Carr families extend their heartfelt gratitude to all friends, family members, and well-wishers who have given their support over the many years. May his life and memory be a continued blessing.
