Carmanita (Wisdom) Hughes, beloved mother, partner, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many, passed away November 2, 2023, at Clarehouse of Tulsa after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born September 12, 1937, to John Henry and Carmanita (Marlow) Wisdom in Oklahoma City, OK.
Carmanita earned her undergraduate degree in education from Central State College in 1968. She earned a master's in education from Northeastern State University in 1986. She held a lifelong love and passion for people with disabilities of all ages. She spent her career as an early childhood special education teacher, retiring from Broken Arrow Public Schools in 2000. During summers, she taught swim lessons at private residences across Tulsa. Carmanita was a dedicated yogi, talented gardener, lover of road trips and an intuitive listener. She will be remembered for her kindness, compassion and acceptance of others.
Carmanita leaves behind her longtime, loving partner, Maurice Powell of Tulsa; sister, Mary Farris of Midland, TX; three daughters, Heidi Hughes (Bob Wolf) of Berkeley, CA, children Trevor Wolf and Taylor Wolf; Jill Hughes Thieman of Rock Hill, SC, children Hugh Henry Thieman and Elliott Thieman; Ashley Hughes Dalton of Tulsa, children Samantha Dale (John) and great-granddaughter Laken; Gentry Dalton and Maguire Duke Dalton; and a nephew, many nieces, cousins and friends.
A memorial service for Carmanita will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 2 pm at Moore's Southlawn, 9350 East 51st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
