On September 24, 1929, Carolyne was born at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas to Frank and Dolly Riviere. She lived to be 94 years old and on March 26, 2024, she passed away at Montereau in Tulsa, OK.
Carolyne grew up in Tyler, Texas. Then attended and graduated Hockaday Junior College in Dallas, Texas. In 1947 was named the Rose Queen of The Texas Rose Festival. She was the first Queen post World War Il. In 2017, she returned to Tyler to commemorate the celebration of the 70th anniversary of her reign as Queen the 1947 Texas Rose Festival. She received an award for her service to Texas from The State of Texas Senate. As the honorary chairman, at the age of 88, she gave an eloquent speech about the history of The Texas Rose Festival.
Carolyne then attended the University of Texas in Austin where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. At UT she met Sam J. Rhoades, Jr., from Tulsa, on a blind date. They married and after 4 children and 40 years of marriage, Sam sadly passed away in 1989. Carolyne married twice more. First to a family friend, Joe L. McArthur in 1997. Second was Jim Grosserode, from Nebraska. They met and later married at Montereau in 2014. She bravely endured having all 3 husbands succumb to cancer.
Carolyne and Sam had 4 children, Sam Ill (Becky), Frank (Nikki), Mike (deceased) and Marci Johnson (Stan). The family has grown exponentially. Carloyne had 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren who are scattered all over the US.
Carolyne believed in helping others. She volunteered diligently and gave her time to several organizations including The Women's Association of the Tulsa Boys' Home, The American Red Cross and Asbury Methodist Church.
Special thanks go out to all who assisted her at Montereau Skilled Nursing, especially her long-time helper Juanita Fox, who is considered part of our family. We also give thanks to caregivers Angel Brown and Stephanie Williams who were both so helpful during these last six months.
Carolyne lived a long wonderful, and beautiful life. She filled all those around her with sweet spirit, cheerful demeaner and goodwill. She will truly be missed by her family and all of those who had the pleasure of getting to know her.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Asbury's Mason Chapel at 6767 S. Mingo in Tulsa on Friday April 5th at 3 P.M. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the abovementioned organizations or The Montereau Fund.
