Carroll Borthick, 80, passed away February 22, 2016 with Betty, his wife of 63 years, his 3 children and family members by his side. Carroll was born in 1935, the youngest of 5 children, to Clay and Luvina Borthick. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
He graduated in 1953 from the 'Old' East Central High School where he was the captain of the football team. His class donated the funds intended for their senior prom to instead provide sidewalks between the various buildings on the East Central campus. Carroll's name can still be seen among his Class of '53 classmates etched into the concrete.
Carroll, with help from his father, built the house that he lived in until his passing. Carroll enjoyed working with his hands and has built several items for family members. He was constantly improving their home with custom-made amenities. He was a member of the Plainview Baptist Church since 1951. Carroll volunteered at the church and did what he was called upon in the name of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
In his early teens he began his work career at the dairy farm owned by close family friends, the Sellmeyers. Carroll began his career at ONG in 1957 as a manual laborer. He was an autodidactic, self-made man who possessed a life-long commitment of educating himself not only in his professional life but in his personal life as well. Due to continued self-education he was promoted to the position of a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor for ONG. Carroll's professional acumen and approachable but professional manner resulted in him being tapped to head several departments during his long tenure at ONG. He was a valued mentor to many who would rise to hold the highest positions within the company. He worked with city officials while representing ONG as a member of the Tulsa Emergency Response Team. This responsibility required extensive travel and training. Carroll retired from ONG in 1995 in the position of Superintendent after 38 years of service.
Carroll believed in giving back to the community and served as a member of Tulsa School Board. He helped coach the East Central Jr. high school football team in the early 70's. As a member of the Kiwanis Club he was the scholarship liaison for East Central. Carroll also volunteered to be Santa Claus so children could have their picture taken with Santa. He was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. He was inducted into the East Central Hall of Fame.
He taught himself to use a PC and a myriad of other electronic devices. He enjoyed maintaining his close relationship with family and his many friends through social media. He also enjoyed photography and was an avid golfer. Carroll was not content to let the world pass him by in his retirement.
Carroll and Betty traveled to Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, Germany, England and Russia and met people who remain close friends to this day. He enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandchildren.
The 63-year long marriage to his high school sweetheart Betty, the love of his life, began in 1952. Their children have fond memories of Carroll and Betty moving the furniture so they could swing dance to their records. Carroll built a large heated & cooled greenhouse to cater to Betty's love of plants. He also provided her a potting shed with heated water.
Carroll is survived by Betty, their 3 children and spouses. Sons David Borthick & wife Michelle, Ray Borthick & wife Donna, daughter Ellen Borthick Ranck and husband Bob.
