Our Beloved father, Charles Justin Noble, went home to our Lord on October 10th, 2017. He was preceded in death by parents, Oscar Clarence and Bertha Lou and sister, Billye Sue and Anna Mary Noble (Ogle), his children's mother.
Charles Justin was born in Sallisaw on August 4th, 1927. He was given his Cherokee name, Jisgwanida (Youngbird) by his grandmother, Sara Ann Burrow (Miller).
Charles Justin joined the United States Army in 1945 and served in the largest and deadliest military conflict in the history of humankind, World War II. After his discharge from the Army in 1947, he worked for the State Department as a linguist, then moved with his family to Tanzania, Africa, to become Director of the Social Research Institute in Nyegezi, Tanzania. Upon his return to the United States, he was a instructor of Anthropology at Goucher College in Baltimore Maryland, earning his Ph.D in Anthropology from Catholic University in 1970.
Charles Justin was proud he was Cherokee and instilled this pride in his children. His wish was that one day his children would be able to learn about Cherokee culture. In 1971, the opportunity to return to his Cherokee roots presented itself. He moved to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, to accept the position of Associate Professor of Sociology at Northeastern State University. During his time at Northeastern State University, he was instrumental in implementing the Indian Studies Program, was a strong advocate for tribal sovereignty and sponsored the Native American Student Association for many years. Charles Justin taught a variety of courses, including Anthropology, American Indian Ethnology, Archeology, Peoples of Africa and Magical World View. He truly loved teaching and mentored many students before retiring from Northeastern State University in 1992.
Charles Justin was a member of St. Antony Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Tulsa. Devoted to his church, he served in any way he could.
He is survived by his children, Claude Mary Whiteshirt, her husband, James Whiteshirt, Christopher David Noble, his wife Dianne, Monica Anne Noble and Miriam Edith Graham and her husband, Adam, grandchildren Gabriel Neskai Allen, Michael Robert Allen, Clint Noble, Barret Noble, Travis Noble, Michael Boling, Madison Warren, Sabrina Graham and Eve Graham, great grandchildren Calista Noble, Janey Boling and Gibson Boling
