Charlotte was born on March 20, 1928 in Rochester, NY to Charlotte Evelyn Schaefer Wall and Malcolm Coburn Wall, 4 years after her brother Henry Schaefer Wall.
In 1941, her beloved brother Hank was captured at the Battle of the Bulge, and after a period as MIA/POW, lived a life he believed was "perfect", dying at the age
of 90 in 2014. Joan Sweet Osborne also preceded her in death after being Charlotte's precious friend from age 3 to 96.
Charlotte had a marvelous education, attending Buffalo Seminary, then Wellesley College. She was later trained in the Montessori Method by Dr. Lena Wickramaratne, a direct student of Maria Montessori.
Married in 1950 to James C. Gibbens, she experienced a glorious year in Germany when Jim was called back into Army service after the War. They adopted Crispin, a long-haired dachshund puppy adored by them both. Charlotte and Jim returned to live in Tulsa, then Oklahoma City in 1952. Their daughter Hilary was born in 1953, Jennifer in 1955. The couple divorced in 1972. In June, 1988, she married Dale Toetz, a professor of zoology at Oklahoma State University. They had countless adventures: fishing, collecting water samples for Dale's research at mountain lakes near Nederland, CO, or pheasant hunting with their dog, Lilly. Charlotte loved doing anything outside in nature, especially on or near water.
Charlotte was a woman of infinite small kindnesses noticed only by careful observers. Her most significant professional achievement was her development of Westminster Day School in Oklahoma City, where she was Head of School from 1964 until 1993. She believed very deeply in the value of independent schools and in independent institutions in general. Of her work at WDS she said, "I'm glad that I had a long, uninterrupted career. I knew many intellectual, dedicated, funny, loving teachers, many truly beautiful parents, and hundreds of happy, promising children. It was a huge, satisfying portion of my life." After retirement from WDS, she commuted to Tulsa for her position of Admissions Director at Riverfield Country Day School in Tulsa, where she watched two of her grandsons grow up.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Dale Toetz, daughters Hilary Ziols and Jennifer Gibbens (Tom Clark), grandsons Owen Ziols (Cary Yang), Eli Ziols, Ben Clark (Katherine Rogers) and Sam Clark (Pin-Fang Wang), great-granddaughter Kira Ri-Li Clark, nephews John and Philip Wall with their families, two stepsons Mark and Eric Toetz and their families, and Dale's brother Paul.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Free to Live Animal Sanctuary, or the charity of your choice.
Planned services will be at Saint John's Episcopal Church 4200 South Atlanta Place, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Thursday, March 19th, 2026 at 10:15 AM for internment of ashes at the columbarium, and 11:00 AM for the memorial service.
