Obituary

Cheryl June Hughes, or Mimi, passed peacefully in her sleep at 1:22am on April 19th, 2025 in the home she shared with R.L. Hughes in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Cheryl June Drummond was born November 8th, 1946, to William T. & June Frances Drummond in Dayton, OH.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her mother, June & her son, Stephen Michael Manuel (12/21/75-11/21/99).
She leaves behind her husband R.L. Hughes, whom she married 2/9/98, 2 sons Tony Manuel & Bryan Manuel from her 1st marriage, and 6 stepchildren from R.L. From oldest to youngest they are: Lisa Hughes-Kopecky, James Arthur (Bubba) Hughes, Joe Hughes, Randy Hughes, Stacey Hughes-Whittington, & Angela Hughes-Black, their respective spouses, grandchildren,
She graduated from Central High School in 1965 & had planned to attend her 60th reunion last weekend & her granddaughter Brenna's wedding in San Antonio on May 4th, 2025.
Cheryl loved dancing. She danced with the Arthur Miller Dance Troupe when she was still in high school & then later taught different styles of line dance at the Caravan Cattle Country bar in the evenings, which is where she met R.L. She also appears briefly in the "Boot Scootin' Boogie" (Brooks & Dunn. 1991) music video that was filmed at the Caravan.
R.L. & Cheryl loved attending New Heart Fellowship in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma & participating in Small Faith Group, children's church, Vacation Bible School & more. She was always happy to volunteer to assist in any way that could be used to reflect God's love onto others.
She was a doting wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, & great-grandmother with a house that was home to any that were welcomed in. If you visited more than twice you were family & over the years the walls of the house would nearly vibrate with the sound of raucous laughter, people yelling out over a card or board game with a table full of people. Holidays & parties that were nearly standing room only, with enough to feed 3 small armies. Or shouts of "BOOOOOMER!" from the living room during football season.
She was a true "pink lady" that loved anything bedazzled to the point of being a fire risk. Her smile could blind you if you gave her the opportunity to brag about her family. She loved pumpkin spice, Cherry Coke, & Christmas/Christmas in July.
The walls of their home are nearly wallpapered with memories too numerous to be able to tell in one day. She had 19 wallet-sized photos of her grandkids in her wallet (NINETEEN?) along with the only cash she always carried, a $100 Monopoly dollar bill that Britnee had given her in the early 2000s.
She was a night owl who loved to stay up watching horror or action movies.
She was part AFV, part Ridiculousness, & part Chicken Soup for the Soul. If you were to say "tears have salt _____________" her family could answer without thought like a congregation or cheerleader.
Her tiny frame couldn't do justice to the amount of love, passion, humor, advice, knowledge, & still that embodied her.
With each tear I wish healing for us all. Grief isn't for the deceased, but for those left behind.
