Obituary

Cinda Shaw Viles, 77, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, May 15th in Tulsa.

Cinda was the beloved wife of Philip "Flip" Viles, her husband of 51 years, and the mother of Amanda, Peter, and Ross. She was also a proud grandmother to Tia and Holly, a loving mother-in-law to Emma, and a steady, warm presence in the lives of her extended family and friends.

She was born on November 2, 1948, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, while her parents were attending Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State University. She spent her formative years in Alva and Hominy where her dad coached several high school sports before the family settled in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She graduated from Charles Page High School in 1967. While there, Cinda enjoyed debate and drama. She also attended Oklahoma State University.

Cinda's adult life was centered on her family and the home she and Flip built together. They made their Tulsa house a true home, filled with holidays, reunions, bridge nights, church groups, and all the little moments in between. She had a gift for taking care of details.

Church was an important part of that life. Over the years, she was part of Southern Hills Church of Christ, Redeemer Covenant Church, and, more recently, Harvard Avenue Christian Church. She taught Sunday school at Southern Hills and Redeemer and helped with church service projects.

Cinda loved her family and stayed closely involved in their lives. She paid attention to what her children were dealing with and was often the one thinking through the details no one else had gotten to yet. In the summer of 2024, she helped plan Ross and Emma's wedding, from the music and menu to the timing, guest list, and all the small things.

She was also a devoted keeper of family tradition. Flip's large family of Milam relatives had gathered annually since 1885 for the Milam Thanksgiving Reunion; Cinda embraced the tradition fully for more than 50 years. To give everyone more time together after the Reunion, she hosted a gathering the next day at her home, where as many as 80 people came together for leftovers, football, Trivial Pursuit, and laughter. She did this enthusiastically for over 25 years, fostering deep family connections and creating memories that will long outlast her.

Cinda loved food and hospitality. She enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes, and planning dinners for friends and family. She knew that feeding people was one of the basic ways to keep family and friends connected. She loved travel, especially trips connected to memory and place, and she documented family trips with detailed scrapbooks and photo albums.

She was a longtime member of the Tulsa Southern and Philcrest Hills tennis clubs and played league matches for more than 30 years.

Cinda was a reader, a bridge player, a careful observer of politics and public life, and a woman with an eye for design. She was a whiz at puzzles, enjoyed Mahjong, and rarely missed her daily Wordle. She kept up with friends through Facebook and frequent texts, always finding ways to stay connected.

She cared deeply about democracy, fairness, and followed the direction of the country with close attention and conviction. She also had a sharp visual sense and enjoyed interior design, art, gardening, and planning family celebrations.

Cinda gave years of service to the Denwood Estates neighborhood, serving as secretary of the Denwood Homeowners Association and helping neighbors navigate city projects, meeting details, and everyday community concerns.

Cinda faced esophageal cancer with bravery and remarkable composure. Even in illness, she remained herself: grateful, practical, and deeply connected to the people she loved.

Cinda is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Philip "Flip" Viles; her children, Amanda Viles, Peter Viles, and Ross Viles and his wife, Emma; her grandchildren, Tia Hollon and Holly Viles; her brother, Tim Shaw and his wife, Cheri, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and her sister, Stephanie Shaw of Pennsylvania.

A service celebrating Cinda's life will be held at Harvard Avenue Christian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, June 6th, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Cinda's memory to Doctors Without Borders (https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/) or World Central Kitchen (https://wck.org/). The family would like to thank Saint Francis Hospice for its compassionate care.
