Obituary

The Rev. Dr. Clarence W. Knippa, Pastor Emeritus of Grace Lutheran Church, peacefully departed this life on November 26, 2013. His abiding faith was the foundation of his long and fruitful life of service to his church, family and community.
Born August 19, 1913 in Fayette Co., Texas to Otto and Frances (Schmedt) Knippa, he was raised in Austin. He was educated at Concordia College, Austin, and Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Following his ordination into the ministry, he served as a city missionary and Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. He moved to Tulsa in 1946 when he accepted a call to be Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church.
He married Elsie Brandt of Ft. Worth in 1937. Their happy union lasted until her death in 2006. They were loving parents to five children: Jerry (Barbara) Knippa of Dallas; Jane (James) Frost of Tulsa; Janet (Bill) Burgess of McKinney, TX; Judy (Kim) White of Washington, DC; and Jack, who died in 1999. They also were the proud grandparents of eight: Kathy (Danny) Shannon; Bill (Stacy) Burgess; Dan (Debbie) Burgess; Chris (Shay) Knippa; Kyle (Sherry) Knippa; Steve (Kim) Burgess; Betsy White; and Graham White; and the great-grandparents of 16.
As well as his faithful service to his beloved congregation, Dr. Knippa participated in a wide range of services throughout the Tulsa community. Active in early efforts to create understanding and tolerance among Tulsans of all religions, he was honored upon his retirement by the establishment of an interfaith lecture series. He was instrumental in the creation of the Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless and the Kendall- Whittier neighborhood ministries.
In addition to his parents, wife and son, he was preceded in death by brothers Raymond, Marvin and Gilbert Knippa and sisters Alice Fehr, Lillian Wende and Genelle Hodge. His surviving sister, Mabel (James) Burnette, resides in Fullerton, CA.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2331 E. 5th Place. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Knippa Lecture Series, Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless or any charity of your choice.
