Cora Wheeler, 85, passed away December 18, 2016. She was born to George and Mary (Tanner) Wheeler on January 11, 1931. Her mother was ill most of Coras early years and passed when she was 6. Cora suffered a serious back injury when she was 8 and spent the next several years in a childrens hospital, some of it in a body cast or traction. She lost her father to a tree logging accident when she was 12. Afterward, she and her sister, Lena went to live their aunt, Vita and her son, B. F. Tatum.
After finishing high school, Cora attended secretarial training and worked for Sun Oil Company for over 30 years. She and 3 close friends Jo, Beverly and Marcella traveled all over the country and to many sporting events. Cora's house, which was back to back with Aunt Vitas sharing a backyard, was the favorite stop for holiday gatherings for all of her family.
Long-time resident of Methodist Manor, she knew everyone and everyone knew her. At 46, Cora was known for her friendliness and feisty sense of humor. She was a long-time member of the University United Methodist Church and a very active volunteer. Both before and after she lived in the Manor, Cora worked in the Bargain Basement, made crafts for the fund-raising bazaar and knitted with a womans group that makes caps for premature newborns. She knitted and crocheted all her life and made countless throws and sweaters for friends, relatives and strangers.
Cora was an avid sports fan from her elementary school days through the rest of her life. As an adult, Cora's teams were the Cardinals and Tulsa U basketball and football. She had strong opinions about the coaches and players, which lead to many "lively" discussions.
Cora was preceded in death by her aunt, Vita Whittington and her sister Lena Johnson.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
