Obituary

Dan M. Slagle of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa on April 17, 2024. Visitation will be held at Moore Funeral Home Southlawn Chapel at 2-5 p.m. April 20. A memorial service will be held at Asbury Methodist Church at 2 p.m. April 22.

Slagle was born on July 31, 1937, on the Bar-T Ranch near Castle, Oklahoma, the youngest of nine children of Otto Slagle and Dolly Johnston Slagle. He attended Castle Elementary School through fifth grade and then transferred to Okemah, where he played all sports available. In 1954, Slagle was named to the all-state football squad. He accepted a four- year scholarship to play football at Oklahoma A & M College (OSU), where he met Margaret Julia Schneider. They were married in Tulsa on July 20, 1957. Slagle joined the advanced Army ROTC program and signed a three-year commitment to become an Army aviator. During his senior year of college, he received training for his private pilot's license.

In 1960, Slagle accepted employment as a petroleum engineer with TEXACO Inc. Three months later, he was deployed to Fort Eustis, Virginia, for Basic Transportation Officer school and then to flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After 11 months of flight training and with an Army instrument flight rating, he was sent to Fort Sill near Lawton, Oklahoma. He completed his military service as a flight instructor at Fort Rucker.

In September 1963, Slagle resumed employment with TEXACO at Fairfield, Illinois, and then worked as an engineer at Northern Natural Gas Co. in Omaha, Nebraska, and later at Kerr-McGee Corp. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Slagle moved to Tulsa in 1970 to work with his father-in-law, Leo A. Schneider, as a commercial contractor. In 1977, Slagle became reservoir engineer and manager at MAPCO, Inc., in Tulsa. His own company for oil and gas production and professional engineering, Bobwhite Production Co., was incorporated in 1981.

The city of Okemah inducted Slagle into the Okemah Hall of Fame.

Slagle is survived by daughter Crista Slagle Grimes (Marc Grimes); son Cory Slagle (wife Kristi); granddaughters Shannon Slagle (husband Pepe Chavez) and Toni Slagle; grandson Noah Grimes; great-grandsons Diego Chavez Slagle and Lucas Chavez Slagle; and other relatives.
