David D Atkinson, 88, Tulsa business-owner of Atkinson Supply Co. and Associated Parts & Supply Co., died on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at St Francis Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dudley D and Macie (Swing) Atkinson, his siblings Jacob Atkinson of Tulsa, Lola (Atkinson) Diffendaffer of Rocky, and Richard Atkinson of Tuttle and twin infant brothers.
David was married 63 years to Etta Jane (Garman) Atkinson. They were blessed with 3 children Debbie (Atkinson) Pearman and husband Bob, David (Buddy) Atkinson and wife Michelle and Gary Atkinson and wife Regina. 7 grandchildren, Leslie (Pearman) Girard and husband Matthew (Matt), Rusty Pearman and wife Jennifer, Mandy Atkinson, Shelby Atkinson, Amanda (Atkinson) Mann and husband Kyle, Kyle Atkinson and Corey Atkinson. They were blessed further with 3 great grandchildren Macie Girard, Ryan Girard and Robert Russell (Russ) David Pearman.
David was born in Sentinel, Ok on October 21, 1932. He attended and graduated from Port School in 1950. He served in the US Army as a helicopter mechanic where he held the rank of Sergeant from 1952-1954. He attended Spartan School of Aeronautics for Aviation Maintenance career and the University of Tulsa. David was active in politics serving his community in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1961-1963 and Tulsa County Commissioner from 1966-1969. He served on the Board of Directors of CompSource Mutual for 10 years.
David loved his family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. David had a passion for flying. He built the majority of his first airplane in his garage at home with the help of his wife, Jane. Later in life, he acquired two more small planes. As a plane owner, he would fly everyday if weather permitted. He enjoyed genealogy and exploring his family tree. The family teased David about attending family reunions of unrelated Atkinson families.
David loved his hometown, Sentinel, Oklahoma. He took his family to his parents' home on Main St. While there visiting David enjoyed driving and showing his family the Atkinson family farm, the section line correction road, and Retrop Cemetery where his parents are buried. Every 3 years, David looked forward to attending the Port School Reunions and spending time looking at pictures while reminiscing of stories from days gone by with classmates.
Viewing will be Friday, December 4 from 10:00-8:00 at Moore Funeral Home, 9350 E 51st St, Tulsa, OK. The services will be graveside at Mount Hope Cemetery in Afton, OK on Saturday, December 5 at 11:00 AM.
