Fred Hampton, 87, of Tulsa, OK passed away August 25, 2024. Fred was born September 10, 1936 in Wise County, TX to Levi Wade Hampton, Sr. and Edith Hampton Lambert (Carleton). Fred moved from Texas to Colorado where he met the love of his life, Gwen Carter. They married and Fred was drafted into the United States Army. They were expecting their first child, David Jr, when Fred was shipped overseas. He served his country honorably in the Peacekeeping Force as a Specialist 4th Class in Korea after the war. After his return, the family moved to Oklahoma and their second child, Marcy, was born.
Fred continued work in his chosen career of the trucking industry, becoming an expert in the handling of oversized freight while at E.L. Powell & Sons Trucking Co. He worked in this field for the rest of his career, long past traditional retirement age.
Fred and Gwen were members of Pairs & Squares square dance club, where they frequently held many offices from Secretary to President, and made lifelong friends.
The family attended Trinity United Methodist Church for over 30 years, before finding their church home with St. Paul's United Methodist Church in 2007.
Fred was an avid O.U. Football fan, enjoyed reading, attending car shows, and was always in search of a project whether it be at his home or anywhere he saw a need. Fred was known to be able to fix most anything, and if he didn't know how, he figured it out.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gwen Hampton (Carter) of the home, son David Fred Hampton Jr and wife Foenix of Sapulpa, OK; daughter Marcy Sue Rao and husband U.K. of Tulsa, OK; five grandchildren: Travis Hampton and wife Teresa, twins Emily and Alex Rao, step grands Frankie and Jeff Burchett; brother Jim Hampton and wife Wanda of Decatur, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
