David Lee Lomax was born February 8, 1929 in Cherryvale, KS and died June 4, 2020 in Tulsa, OK, at the age of 91. He graduated from Rogers High School in 1947, and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. at the age of 18.
He was a sergeant in the army during the Korean War and then returned to his job with SWBT, where he worked for 40 years. He married the love of his life, Nell Eliza Ledford in 1953; and they celebrated over 66 years together last October. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, Papa to his grandchildren and enjoyed lifelong friendships. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Madolyn Lomax; his brother, Marvin Lomax II; and grandson, Robert Lomax Jr. He is survived by 6 children: Nanette, Pam, Cindy, David, Bobby and Denise; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.
Dave loved to fish and hunt, whether it was with all his kids, just his boys, or his beloved brothers-in-law and nephews, or friends. Some of his fondest memories are of being able spend time at a pond, lake or river in search of 'The next fish story', not to mention what adventure or mishap took place while on the water or during a hunt.
One of the first things you noticed about Dave was his smile; it lit up his face and you just had to smile in return. His grin was the best- it was mischievous, fun and usually flashed after a quick joke or funny story or when he was teasing someone.
He truly loved to have family and friends gather at their home. He and Nell often had a house full of grandkids after holidays or on weekends. They all have cherished memories of times spent at Mimi and Papa's with the cousins. Papa was famous for making homemade milkshakes, special breakfasts, and his grilled chicken, steaks, and smoked turkeys could have won awards.
He'll always be remembered as a great husband, dad and family man, but he was also a great coworker, boss, manager, friend and neighbor. He was a generous man and gave of his time, attention and help and didn't have to wait to be asked. He could fix anything and if he didn't know how, he figured it out; "Dad knows, ask Papa, we'll check with Dave" was a common saying in the family.
He never lacked patience, and would always take the time needed to explain why you couldn't or shouldn't do something; or how to do something. He was able to understand and relate to his children, each with their different personalities and made sure they knew they were special and loved. He always put others first. He was a blessing to all who knew him.
Heaven gained an angel. He is with his dad for the first time since he was nine years old; and back with his mom and brother; and getting to hold baby Robert for the first time; seeing his brothers-in-law and countless friends and family. They were all waiting at the gates of Heaven for him, and though he's not here, He's Home.
