Obituary

Dean Byron Englund, the son of Oscar Edmund Englund and Pauline May (Jones) Englund, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, September 18, 1938. His brother Chuck was born two years later. The family moved several times over the years with his dad's work. The brothers were always close and shared many of the same interests growing up, becoming Eagle Scouts at the same time. Dean graduated from high school in Hot Springs, Arkansas, then went to Kansas State University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, Dean enlisted in the Army National Guard and after training, moved to Tulsa where he went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1962 as a design and structural engineer. He continued his education while working at the Corps and received his Master of Science in Bioenvironmental Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1977. He retired from the Corps in 1998.

On June 8, 1963, he married Sonja Diane Burkhart. They had met on a blind date set up by mutual friends. Together they had two children, Laurie Gail and Andrew Clay. They were married for 56 wonderful years.

Dean and Sonja have been active members of Park Plaza, now The Park Church of Christ for 37 years. Dean truly had a servant heart. Over the years he used his building skills in almost every area of the old building and helped create some fantastic vacation Bible schools. For the last several years he worked in benevolence and in their food bank.

Dean loved the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, hiking, rock collecting, and shooting sports (skeet and pistol). He was a charter member of Tulsa Red Castle Gun Club, where he served as secretary for a number of years. He loved going to his cozy cabin with Sonja and family outside Divide, Colorado, and fly fishing with his brother at Ute Lakes.

On Thursday, July 25, 2019, Dean Byron Englund, at the age of 80, went to be with his Lord. He will be missed by all that had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Polly Englund, and his son, Andrew Clay Englund. He is survived by a loving family which includes his wife Sonja, his daughter Laurie Kay, husband Phil, and granddaughter Avery of Tahlequah, OK; his brother Charles Edmund Englund and wife Kathy of Colorado Springs, CO, and niece Kristine Englund of Denver, CO, along with a host of friends and relatives
