Obituary

The hardest working man in the world has died. Delbert Vernon Winder was born on Bill Murray's favorite day, Groundhog Day, 02/02/1939 to Ray and Edna Winder. The Winder siblings born to this union were Mardelle Jessee (deceased), Delbert Winder; June Cathers of Chanute, KS; Claudette Culp of Petrolia, KS; and Bill Winder of Chanute, KS.

Delbert spent his life always working. He was a jack of all trades, and if you asked him, "master of a few". After serving in the Army in Korea, Delbert moved back to SE Kansas where he married Kathleen (McGregor) Winder by swooning her with his larger than life cowboy boots and dancing skills. During their marriage, Delbert owned Lakeview Gas Station (Buffalo, KS); was President of Production Credit Association (Chanute, KS); Farrier (Southeast KS); Brick Mason and Superintendent of Homes in Tulsa, OK where he continued to reside during his golden years. We are confident his next position will entail his captivating storytelling for which he was famous.

The Delbert we all knew and enjoyed was devoted to his kids, grandchildren, favorite dogs, horses and most of all his job! Delbert never met a stranger, but if he did they immediately became his friend. After many years of hard work, he finally retired at the ripe age of 80 and was shortly thereafter diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Once his Alzheimer's began to progress, the bolder Delbert moved back to Chanute to reside on a horse farm with his daughter before finding a home at the Brookdale Residential Facility in Tulsa, OK. Delbert kept in contact from the facility with his children requesting items he would need to carry out his escape from "the senior Olympic training camp", Brookdale Alzheimer's Facility. These hilarious stories his children will forever share in true Delbert fashion.

Left behind to carry on Delbert's legacy: Tracey and Darin Winder, favorite daughter, and favorite son, along with Darin's better half, "Short Pockets", Lacy Matthewson. Kody Kuhn (grandson), Abi Elsesser, Amber Cooper and Ashley Cooper (granddaughters) along with 4 great grandchildren. We are more than certain Grandpa Delbert is now teaching his granddaughter Mateah Mayfield, and great granddaughter, Avery Kuhn how to ride NoWaChe, and no doubt placing that infamous dollar bill under their butts while riding, so they learn to set tight and get it just right!!

Delbert has now joined his loving wife, Kathy, his sister Mardelle, 2 granddaughters along with some wonderful dogs and horses. If you feel the urge to spend money in honor of Delbert's celebration of life, he would not want it wasted on flowers. Instead, he would be happy if you took your family to a movie or rodeo, donated to a dog or horse rescue, write a check to the Ronald McDonald House, Alzheimer's research, or just buy a good bottle of booze to toast a great memory you two shared.

He lived a full and happy life and we were honored to celebrate the time we had with him between 02/02/1939 and 08/13/2022. We encourage you to do the same.

A reception to honor Delbert's life will be held at Moore's Southlawn Family Center on Friday, August 26th, 2022 from 11:00am-1:00pm.
