Obituary

Donald Edgar Cox was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 31st, 1951.

He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1969.

Don began working at Tulsa pawn shops in high school, including Second Hand Rose. Don and his sister, Christy, both worked as volunteers (Candy Stripers) at Hillcrest Hospital.

Don attended Tulsa Junior College in the 1970s, taking police science courses. Don listened to KMOD radio station, and Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles were among his favorites. He once traveled to Dallas to a Rolling Stones concert.

He worked for Telex in Tulsa in the 1970s, then transferred to Phoenix, Arizona to work for Intel. He returned to Tulsa in 1980.

Don was an avid bicyclist and owned a touring bicycle. He was a member of the Tulsa Bicycle Club. He rode in Oklahoma FreeWheel for several years, and in RAGBRAI (Registers Annual Great Bicycle Race Across Iowa).

Don loved cats, and he passed on this love to his family.

Don met his wife, Carol, in December 1983 through a mutual friend. They were married on March 8th, 1985. At the time, Don had three cats, and Carol had three children!

Don worked in aircraft building and maintenance in the 1980s - Rockwell International and McDonnell-Douglas. He also worked for various building and maintenance supply companies, such as Payless Cashways. He often worked two jobs at the same time.

Don became interested in Gravely tractors since his father-in-law owned one. This led him to join the Gravely Tractor Club of America.

Don was an assistant scoutmaster for Tulsa Boy Scout Troop 37, and a co-leader with Carol for Tulsa Girl Scout Troop 126. Don and Carol were volunteer leaders for Girl Scout summer day camp for many years.

In 1997, Don and Carol bought a house in Verdigris, Oklahoma, not far from where Carol's parents had lived. Don enjoyed living in Verdigris and getting to know and help his neighbors.

Don could build or repair almost anything. He enjoyed working in his garage and owned about every type of tool you can think of! Among the many projects he completed were remodeling the family dining room, and building a cat climbing tree, headboard for the bed, and shelves for the family home.

He also had an interest in classic Serro Scotty travel trailers - he traveled to the east coast to buy some and bring them back home to refurbish. Don also enjoyed going to garage sales and flea markets.

Don, Carol, and Brandy enjoy watching science fiction TV shows and movies. They attended Tulsa Star Trek Expo conventions and Tulsa Comic-Con together.

Unfortunately, Don faced many health and medical challenges after recovering from triple-bypass heart surgery in 2008. In October 2021, he developed pneumonia and sadly, spent most of the last three years of his life hospitalized and eventually bedridden. Don was a strong man and fought to regain his health. He passed away on August 12th, age 72.

Don is preceded in death by his father, Robert E Cox and half-brother Robert David Cox.

Don is survived by: Carol Cox (wife of 39 years), Brandy Burkett (stepdaughter), and [four cats] at the home in Verdigris; Bridget McGee (stepdaughter - Stafford, Virginia), and Steven Burkett (stepson - Broken Arrow, OK), and five step-grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Vivian Gomez, Greeley, Colorado; sister, Christy Chandler, Greeley, Colorado; half-brother Carl Cox; half-sister Ronda Edwards, and many nieces and nephews.
