Don served in the Army during World War II at Fort Sheridan, IL. Don attended Kansas State University on the GI bill where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Don worked for Amoco Production Company for more than 35 years traveling across the country and settling in Tulsa in 1976 where he was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He retired from Amoco in 1986.

Don and Barbara adopted their children, Stacy and Steven, from the Methodist Mission Home in San Antonio, Texas in 1966 and 1968 respectively.
