Obituary

Mrs. Doris Ann Mason, age 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 10th, 2021. Doris was the daughter of Vella McClain McLaughlin and Clarence McLaughlin. She was born March 30th, 1940, in Raymond, Kansas. She attended public schools in Ellinwood, Kansas, where she met the love of her life, Donald Mason. They began dating in high school and were soon inseparable. Don was 3 years older than Doris and after he graduated from high school, he was being moved from Ellinwood to El Dorado, due to work. He didn't want to leave Doris behind and thought that the distance was too far to continue dating. So one Saturday night (June 15th, 1957) they went to the next county over and met the judge at his home. They had to wait for him to get out of the bath and were then married there in his living room. Doris was 17 at the time and was between her Junior and Senior years of high school. She didn't immediately tell her mother that she was married. But this led to a long union of 45 years which only ended when Don preceded Doris in death on May 5, 2002. During their marriage, they were blessed with 3 children: Denise, Deric and Dawna. Doris enjoyed helping Don with projects around the house, working in the yard, doing genealogy research and volunteering at MacArthur Elementary School. She was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church and volunteered at Dayspring Villa. Doris was loved by many and always known for her quick wit and the way she could remember pretty much anything. She always made people feel special and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children: Denise Hatfield; Deric and wife Mary Mason; and Dawna Mason. Grandchildren: Brittany and husband Ryan Escoe; Jesse and wife Becca Hatfield; Zach and his wife Sam Hatfield; Alexis and her husband Dan Waetzig; Jonna Hatfield; and Hunter Jacob. Great-grandchildren: Joe and Jake Escoe; and Railynne and Daemion Waetzig and Joel Hatfield. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Leroy McLaughlin. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Don Mason; parents Clarence and Vella McLaughlin; and brothers Eugene, Gilbert and Dale McLaughlin.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die." - unknown
