Dorothy Virginia Carter was born June 11, 1935 on a farm just over the Oklahoma/Kansas line in Chautauqua County, Kansas. The Carter family moved to Pawhuska, Oklahoma when she was in the 6th grade. She graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1953. That same year, shortly after Thanksgiving, she met the love of her life, Harold Fowler Jacobs. They became engaged Christmas Eve and married February 13, 1954 at the Tulsa County Courthouse.
Fowler and Dorothy were truly partners in all ways; love, marriage, parenthood and business. They were co-owners and operators of an industrial weed control business. In the beginning, Dorothy was the secretary and bookkeeper. In the 1950's, she had the distinction of being the first licensed female pest exterminator in Oklahoma. In the early 1970's, she began working side by side with her husband in the oil and gas fields, driving the trucks, pulling hose, and doing the bookkeeping by hand in the truck's cab. Their work took them throughout Oklahoma, northern Texas, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. They moved residence several times following business opportunities - from Pawhuska to Dallas, Texas and back, then to Bartlesville, Fairfax, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Tulsa, and finally to Sapulpa where they stayed for 50 years.
In her "spare" time, Dorothy enjoyed gardening, reading, baking, sewing, crocheting, embroidery, redecorating, and tole painting. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Ladies Oriental Shrine.
On October 30, 2026, Dorothy passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her husband Fowler, her parents George Edward Carter and Edith Ethel Carter, five brothers: Leroy Chapman, Ivan Chapman, Frank Chapman, George E. Carter, and John Carter as well as three sisters: Willa "Bill" Brockman, Lillian Obermeyer, and Sarah Chapman.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her daughter Mickey Miller and husband Marty; her son, Fowler Jacobs and wife Cathy. She will also be missed by 5 grandchildren: Amy Addison, Scott Jacobs, Joshua Jacobs and wife Michelle, Travis Miller and wife Cassie, and Tony Miller and wife Shannon. In addition, Dorothy has eight great-grandchildren, Celeste and Brooklynn Addison, Parker and Aiden Jacobs, Gunner and Colton Jacobs, and Anna and Paul Miller. Dorothy will also be greatly missed by her surviving sister, Mary Duncan, as well as many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation is 6pm-8pm, Tuesday, November 3, 2026 at Moore's Southlawn Funeral Home, 9350 E. 51st Street, Tulsa. Graveside will be 2pm, Wednesday, November 4th at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5151 S. Memorial Drive, Tulsa.
