Dorothy Lee (Beck) Phillips
Born: March 11, 1932
City: San Antonio, Texas
Died: March 12, 2023
City: Edmond, Oklahoma
Born to German Catholic parents, 'Dot' grew up in San Antonio, Texas, as one of eight children. Two streets over lived the Phillips family, into which she would later marry. She attended South San Antonio High School, where she was a cheerleader and met a certain boy, Marvin Phillips, who ran track and became her boyfriend. They married on July 4, 1953 at the South San Church of Christ. While Marvin was in the U.S. Air Force, serving overseas in Korea, Dot gave birth to their first child, Alan. Marvin returned to Texas and pursued his passion to become a preacher in churches of Christ. They had two additional children while living in Texas, Mark and Tammy. Dot was the consummate homemaker and hospitable preacher's wife wherever they lived. They served with churches in Stockdale and Port Lavaca, before moving to Siloam Springs, Ark. In 1962 they moved their young family to Perth, Australia as missionaries to join two other American families, the Wyatts and Durhams. Over the next eight years they would serve as church planters, helping to establish two congregations in that city, Embleton and City Beach. In 1970, they accepted the invitation to return to the U.S. and serve as lead minister at a new congregation in Tulsa, Okla., the Garnett Church of Christ. They were with this church to Marvin's retirement in 1996 and moved to Broken Arrow, Okla., where they lived until his passing in 2018. Six months later Dot moved to Edmond, Okla., to be near more of her family until her passing.
There was never a dull moment in the Phillips household. Dot was a loving and faithful wife. She and Marvin were married for nearly 65 years. She was an incredible godly mother to three, grandmother (aka, 'Nanny', 'Granny Dot') to nine, and great-grandmother to fourteen. She was a mighty prayer warrior, devoted friend, and lover of God's creation, especially flowers and birds. Dot was known for her smile, her cooking, sharing her home with hundreds, and encouraging her children and grandchildren to live lives of purpose for the Lord. She loved to hear the laughter of her grandchildren and modeled a sweet spirit to her death. She has gained the prize of heaven's grand reunion.
Dot leaves behind her sons, Alan (Donna), of Edmond, OK; Mark (Amy), of Nashville, TN; and daughter, Tammy Bresee (Dale), of Edmond, OK; grandchildren Jamie, Kristi, Kent, Abby, Jennifer, Amy, Keller, Jason, and Anna; and fourteen great-grandchildren, as well as several nephews and nieces.
