Edward Stanley Hawkins was born at home in Collinsville,
Oklahoma on June 23, 1921. Stanley?s parents were Nanny Lou
and Harvey Hawkins who have passed on. He had one brother,
Tommy, who also has died.
Stanley was a proud member of the first graduating class
of Daniel Webster High School in 1939. He served as Senior
Class President and President of the Student Council. He was
inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1990.
?Stanley? served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II on board two different destroyers.
His first ship, the USS Farenholt suffered much damage
at sea and was thought to be sunk. The crew managed to bind
up the large hole in the side and bailed water until
it made it to port much to the Navy?s surprise.
The second ship, the USS Isherwood, was hit by a
suicide plane but managed to be repaired and returned to
duty. Many lives were lost on board these two destroyers
but Torpedoman First Class Hawkins managed to come home to his family
without a scratch at the end of his service.
Stanley served on the Tulsa Fire Departmentfor 37 years,
21 years as Chief of the department, retiring in 1985.
He worked in the Tulsa office for Governor David Walters.
Later, he joined the Tulsa office of CompSource Oklahoma,
retiring on a permanent basis in 2001 at the age of 80.
?Chief? Hawkins leaves behind his wife of 16 years, Marcia;
Two grandchildren, Denise Webber and Rayce Hawkins,
whose father, Dennis Hawkins passed away in 1983;
their spouses; three greatgrandchildren; Janet Rogers,
a stepdaughter by a previous marriage;
and Marcia?s family, Barry and Dan Koonce and their
wives and children. He was a member and past president
of the Tulsa Rotary Club, as well as a member of American Legion,
Akdar Shrine, VFW and Royal Order of Jesters.
He will be missed by many people not only in Tulsa but across the country.
Service will be at First Christian Church, 913 South Boulder,
Tulsa, OK 74119, Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 10:00 AM.
Chief Hawkins will be transported by the Tulsa Fire Department to Memorial Park Cemetery where graveside service will be held.
