Obituary

We are celebrating and sharing the life of Edward Owen Fischer who was born in Winfield, Kansas August 23, 1930 and passed from this world on January 10, 2018 at 87 years of age. One of five children his own father passed away when he was 5 years old. He was raised by his mother and her large Irish Catholic family in Augusta, Kansas during the Depression. His Moriarty family was always a big part of his life and he loved to talk about his Uncle Bud who was like a father to him. He grew up and went to school in a two-room school house until the 7th grade when he went to public school. He loved raising pigeons as a boy and exploring the small town of Augusta where his adventures were like a young Huckleberry Finn. During WWII when help was scarce he worked 10 hour days on the railroad at age 13 until the railroad foreman found out how old he was. He delivered milk and worked in an ice plant as well. He unloaded watermelon trucks when he was young and worked on a farm in Beloit, Kansas when he was 16. Later he worked in the oil fields in Sedgewick, County Kansas for Magnolia Oil Company. He met his future wife and the love of his life, Joyce Bradley, at the local drug store. He married Joyce in 1952 on August 15 and they have had 65 wonderful years together.
Ed and Joyce had four children Susan Edwards of Tulsa Oklahoma, David Fischer of Augusta Kansas, Eric Fischer of Derby Kansas and Terri Fischer-Smith who lives in Sharon Vermont. Ed is survived by his wife Joyce, his children and their spouses along with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His children and grandchildren have grown up hearing the wonderful stories he told of his life. Besides stories of his childhood he also shared his experiences serving two years in the army and working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Later he went to college at the University of Wichita and then became a Jayhawker at the University of Kansas where he received his degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1960. He worked for Skelly Oil Company in Hutchinson, Kansas and later was hired as chief engineer for Petroleum Incorporated a division of Garvey Oil in Great Bend, Kansas in 1964. He moved to Jenks, Oklahoma in 1975 where he worked as chief engineer of operations for the Kaiser-Francis Oil Company for seven years. His innovative ideas helped him to increase production for the companies he worked for over the years. Eventually, he started his own company, KC Oil which he operated until his retirement.
Along with coaching little league baseball for his boys when they were young and hunting with them he also took his family on a couple of famous camping trips in Kansas and Colorado. Ed got his pilot's license when he moved to Oklahoma and bought his first airplane. He loved to fly his Grumman Tiger which he kept at Jones Riverside Airport in Jenks. He and Joyce enjoyed several years of flying around the country making trips to Canada, Colorado, Louisiana and also as far east as Vermont. Most of their trips in later years were to Augusta, Kansas to see family and friends. Ed felt that he had the " luck of the Irish" because of all the wonderful adventures he had during his life and the several times that he recounted avoiding death from near drowning when he was a boy to escaping hazards with automobiles, lightning, oil rigs on land and in the Gulf of Mexico as well as flying airplanes. A family member compared him to movie star Robert Mitchum in looks when he was young and his adventures in life to Indiana Jones.
The last few years Ed loved spending time working around the house, feeding the wild birds and keeping his large lot mowed. He could repair anything and enjoyed inventing devices to make life easier for Joyce, such as the automatic doggie door for their little dog Pandy. He loved old movies like Mayberry, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, old westerns, football and historical documentaries. His greatest joy in life were his children and his grandchildren.
Ed will be missed by all who loved him and those who knew him as the kind, generous and loving man that he was in this life. We will be celebrating his life on Saturday January 20 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma at 10:00 am. There will also be a rosary said on Friday January 19th at 7:00 pm at St. Bernard's Church. A burial service will be conducted at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, Kansas on February 10, 2018.
