On Tuesday, June 18, 2019 Elizabeth Mae Smith Sheridan passed away at the age of 86. Elizabeth, or Betty, as she was called, was born on May 9, 1933 in Tulsa, OK to Morton Edward and Cora Rose (Davis) Smith-the youngest of 9 children. All six of Betty's brothers fought in and returned from World War II. However, her beloved mother died of cancer when Betty was only 10 years old.
After graduating from Tulsa Central High School, Betty spent some time in California before returning to work as a bookkeeper at First National Bank of Tulsa. It was in keeping the books for Kent Douglas Sheridan that Betty met her forever love. Betty and Kent were married for more than 61 years before Kent passed away December 22, 2018, and Betty followed him only 6 months later. On May 25, 1957 the two had begun their journey as husband and wife, bringing up four children: Mary Ann, Kent Douglas Jr. (Doug), Phillip and Laura.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Kent; parents Morton and Cora; brothers Carl, Gerald, Morton Edward Jr., Edward, Donald and Robert, and grandson Parker Sheridan.
The memory of her beautiful life will be cherished by her family: daughter Mary Ann and son-in-law Larry Donze, their children Anna, Claire, Samuel and Kent; her son Doug; her son Phillip and daughter-in-law Kim and their sons Ben, Clayton and Gus; and her daughter Laura and son-in-law Daniel Crutcher and their sons Brandon and Jacob. She is also survived by sisters Jean Lantz and Mary Morlas, niece Linda Genet and a host of other loving family and friends.
Betty was incredibly giving of her time, talents and treasure. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother and constantly spoke about how proud she was of her family.
Outgoing and whip-smart, she made everyone laugh with her honesty about strange situations, sometimes just by fearlessly addressing them. A tireless homemaker, it was only when Betty earned an associates degree as a medical assistant that she realized how well her mind worked. Despite having to memorize all the bones in the body and other difficult facts, Betty made straight A's. She also earned a real estate license, but her passion lay in serving her family and creating a wonderful home. She also served her community, volunteering with the Assistance League of Tulsa to help the less fortunate.
Betty enjoyed playing and watching golf and was a member of Oaks Country Club with Kent for many years. She painted, sang and decorated beautifully. She also adored her two half-poodle, half-West Highland Terrier dogs, Spring and Lake, and loved giving the Westipoos run of the house.
Growing up, she was the "fun mom" who was infinitely generous, never complaining about big favors like changing your school or huge favors like taking you every day. She enjoyed life with great energy, making drudgery like grocery shopping fun and full of laughter. Long after we were grown, she still helped us constantly-selflessly and without guilt or expectation. Whether hosting all of us with lavish meals or helping one of us wallpaper our home, she just gave and gave: a wife, mother and grandmother who truly loved being all of those things.
Viewing will start at 9am the morning of service. Funeral Services are set for 10am, Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Moore Funeral Home - Southlawn Chapel, 9350 E 51st St, Tulsa, OK.
