Ethel Mae Brown, age 91, passed away in Tulsa on February 5, 2023. Ethel was born on August 14, 1931, in Cushing, OK, to M.Y. and Pearl Brown. Graduating from OU in 1953 with a degree in pharmacy, she then made her home in Tulsa. Ethel worked at the Hillcrest hospital pharmacy for her entire career.
Though never married, Aunt Ethel treasured her many siblings and extended family, and made sure her nieces and nephews had plenty of fun on the many adventures she sponsored. Ethel was very involved in the Tulsa Altrusa club, and a season ticket holder for decades at 8 venues of the arts, including symphony, ballet, opera and theater. She was a member of numerous organizations, including the Audubon Society, Native Plant Society, and the Smithsonian. Ethel was passionate about books and traveling. She visited all six inhabited continents, and was said to have the largest private home book collection ever seen in Tulsa.
Ethel is survived by her sister-in-law Karen Brown of Tulsa, brother-in-law Ken Chowins of Kansas City, "sister" Shirley Lee of Toronto, Canada, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church of Tulsa, where Ethel was active since 1985, or to your favorite local library or arts organization.
