Ethel Jane Simmons passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2015, at the age of 89. Born to Luther and Rosetta Carter in Foard County, Texas on June 30, 1925, Ethel was the 5th of 8 children. She grew up working alongside her parents and siblings picking crops in Oklahoma. After completing her education, she moved to Tulsa. Ethel worked at the lunch counter in the H.S. Kress department store and at the coffee shop in the Atlas Life Building. She married Lawrence Vernon Simmons, her husband of 54 years and 10 months, on February 2, 1947. The couple settled in Tulsa and welcomed their son, Larry, into the world in 1956. In 1962, Ethel opened Ethel's Beauty Shop in her home on West Third Street where she worked as a beautician from 1963 to 1999. Ethel was sweet and kind and loved any activity that brought her family together. Her laugh brought joy to others. She is survived by her son, Larry V. Simmons, and his wife, Dana Simmons, of Cleveland, Oklahoma; her grandson, Carter Simmons, and his wife, Brittaney Simmons, of Sand Springs; her sister, Nora Estes, of Cleveland; and her brother, Thelbert Carter, of Tulsa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
