Retired Tulsa Fire Department District Chief, Eugene (Gene) A. Bowlin died peacefully at home at age 95 on December 12, 2023.
His parents, Jay and Bernice Bowlin, welcomed Gene into the world on August 30, 1928, in Tulsa, OK. Gene never knew his sister Bernadine as she died of crib death before he was born. Though an only child he had many cousins that were as close as siblings.
Gene graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1946 where he loved sports, was an avid wrestler and played drums in the marching band. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves and Oklahoma State University. His parents owned the City Art Store on Boulder across the street from the Federal Building in downtown Tulsa. He worked there with his father making custom picture frames.
Gene met Jacquelyn Flick at young adult activities at University Methodist Church. Gene and Jackie were married at University Methodist Church in 1950 where they became members and made many cherished friendships. Vicki was born in 1952 and their son Ron was born in 1956. Early in their marriage Gene joined the Tulsa Fire Department while continuing to work with his dad at the City Art Store, an arraignment he maintained until his father retired as he was a faithful, dependable, and loving son.
The 1970's ushered in some major changes. His marriage to Jackie ended in divorce. Gene courted and married Ernie Ann Darrow, a successful realtor in Tulsa, and gained two stepchildren, Steve and Susie. While still working for the fire department, Gene also obtained his real estate license and a broker's license. Working as a team, Gene and Ernie Ann had successful careers selling real estate. They spent leisure time at their lake house. They joined Parkview Baptist Church where he became a deacon in the church, serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board for several years.
Of all the career activities in Gene's life he truly enjoyed being a fireman most of all. He said it was the best because he helped people in a time of great need, not to mention the lifelong friendships made with fellow firefighters and the highly competitive ping pong games at the fire station. Gene retired from the fire department as district chief in 1985. He continued to work in real estate with Ernie Ann until her death in 2007.
Gene and JoAnne Wiles met at Parkview Baptist Church Sunday School Class. They were married on February 16, 2008. They enjoyed traveling, their church, visiting with friends and family, and living at the lake house, having fun on their pontoon boat fishing and swimming. Gene called JoAnne the "love of this life". They shared a beautiful and loving union with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife JoAnne, her son David Wiles (spouse Charlotte) and her daughter Gaye Magee. Gene's daughter Vicki Bowlin and son Ron Bowlin (spouse Kim). Ernie Ann's son Steve Billington and daughter Susie Darrow. Gene loved the Lord and his family. He exemplified the values of hard work, integrity, and honesty. His Christian legacy lives on as he is blessed with many precious grandchildren and great grandchildren
