Gary Don Mitchell, died Monday, February 5, 2024. He was born on November 5, 1952, in Oklahoma City. Raised in Tulsa by his parents, Robert Sidney Mitchell and Iva Lorene Mitchell. Gary graduated early from Edison High School and then from University of Kansas (KU).
He married the love of his life, Ruth Ellen Mattingly in Tulsa in 1981. Gary was preceded in death by: his grandparents; his parents; his uncle, Bill Mitchell; his daughter-in-law, Krista Michaela Beck; his brother-in-law, Michael Matheny; and his beloved dog, Dervish. He is survived by: his wife, Ruth; his son, Jesse Daniel Mattingly-Killian, and his daughter, Phoebe Elora Mattingly-Parker, and her husband, Forest Devon Parker; his son, Richard Aaron Mitchell and wife, Annie Evelyn Mitchell and their children, Dexter and Eleanor; his sister, Joann Whitley and her husband Bill Whitley, and their sons Scott and Jake; his sister, Glenda Matheny, and her children, Chad and Michelle; his lifelong friends, Kerry Delk and Richard Bowman; and by many grand-nieces, grand-nephews and friends.
Gary was part-owner of The Middle Eastern Deli, a favorite of many Tulsans. He worked for many years in the catering and hospitality industry, serving as president and manager of the Trade Winds Hotel Corporations and the Elephant Run restaurant and club in Tulsa until 2012.
Gary was a member of The Royal Order of the Jesters, district 47, the Tulsa Scottish Rite, and The Akdar Shrine. Gary volunteered for many years as a Big Brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma and with Cancer Sucks.
Gary, thank you for your boundless generosity and kindness, your wit and sense of humor, your loyalty to family and friends, and your unmistakable laugh.
