Carter, Gene, 92, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 in Tulsa, OK. Born July 27, 1925 in Strang, OK to John F. and Edith (Mowery) Carter. He was a US Navy veteran having served as a 28th Special Seabee in WWII. He was the owner of Carter's Auto Parts and Machine Shop.
Gene began his career in racing in 1951 near Pampa, TX. He competed primarily along the AHRA circuit in the beginning and won the E Gas Track Championship title in Oklahoma City in 1967. He was Driver of the Year in Tulsa in 1970 and won 31 of 35 races. He participated in the first super gas race ever held in Tulsa in 1979 and won that event. He won two AHRA national events in 1982 in Kansas City and San Antonio. The last big race Gene won was in 1985 in Green Valley, TX at a NHRA Super Sunday Event. He retired from racing at the age of 88. Gene was a member of several car clubs including North Tulsa Racer's Association. An active member in the Tulsa Vette Set and the oldest licensed drag racer in N.H.R.A. history.
Preceded in death by his parents; son, Curtis Carter; daughter, Velma Perdue; two brothers; Dale Carter and Bill Carter; two sisters, June Mowry and Gypsy Butler, and grandchild, Jeremy Landrum. Survived by his wife, LaVon Carter of the home; daughters, Wanda Harris (Jay) of Ft. Worth, Cathy Anthony (Jimmy) of Tulsa, OK, and Crystal Dossman of Tulsa, OK; son, David Dossman (Jennifer) of Tulsa, OK; brother Franky Carter; two sisters, Deta Hogan and Wanda Hedrick and seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
