Obituary

George Washington Jr, 80, of Tulsa, Oklahoma went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 15, 2023.

George was born on March 7, 1942 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to George Washington Sr. and Frances Mae (Poe) Washington. George moved to Tulsa as a toddler, grew up and lived in the Riverside area his whole life. He graduated from Edison High School and remained involved with his alumni group, maintaining many long-term friendships from his elementary and high school years.

George spent the next seven years attending the University of Oklahoma where he earned a Bachelor's degree in journalism and a law degree (JD). He joined the Army National Guard during his college years and served six years. He started his training as a medic and ended up serving in the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG). After graduation, George began practicing law in 1968 with his father and then later by himself for 54 years. George was still practicing law at the time of his death, because he wanted to continue to help others.

On June 3, 1968, the day after he graduated from law school, George married Iris Whittaker. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Katharine, and they remained happily married for 54 years.

George was an avid book collector and lover of books. He was also interested in military history and collected military shoulder patches and insignia. He combined both of these interests when he compiled and edited U.S Military Shoulder Patches of the United States Armed Forces, including five editions. He was a sports enthusiast who particularly liked football and rooting for the Sooners.

George loved the Lord and lived his life for others, always there to help his family, many dear friends, and legal clients.

George is preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances, his in-laws Lee Whittaker and Iris Whittaker Guild, his brother-in-law Charles Whittaker, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and Sharon Ward and son-in-law, Tim Moore.

George is survived by his wife, Iris, his daughters, Beth Moore of Spring, Texas and Kathy (Andy) Locker of Tulsa, Oklahoma and sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, cousins, many nieces and nephews and a host of dear friends.

Donations can be made in George's honor to the Tulsa Audubon Society's wildlife rehabilitation network, WING IT.
