George Riley Newman, of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Wimberley, Texas, passed away peacefully at his Texas nursing home on August 23, 2020. George exuded a zest for life, all of his 99 plus years. He was born on May 29, 1921, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late George and Eleanora Newman.
George was a 52-year resident of Tulsa, Oklahoma with wife Marilyn, before moving to Wimberley in 2018. He was active 25 years with the Tulsa American Red Cross, a Judge for Tulsa County Voters Poll, and a long-time Boy Scouts volunteer. George enjoyed working out with friends at the YMCA, and numerous family trips, following retirement. Prior to retiring, George's career was in kitchen cabinet distribution, selling to apartment developers during the boom of the industry.
George enlisted in the Army Air Force immediately after Pearl Harbor and was stationed as a P-47 pilot mechanic in Iceland. Following three tours, he went to Denver University receiving a BA and MA in Psychology, from 1946 to 1952. After determining that "he didn't like listening to people whine," George went on to sales positions starting with McKesson Drug, snow skied, and raced Corvettes and Jaguars in his spare time. It was in Denver where he met and married schoolteacher Marilyn Allen on June 9, 1962, and raised their son Jay, until moving to Tulsa.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn, and two sisters, Bette and LaVerne. He is survived by his son Jay and his wife Jennifer, and three grandchildren, Audrey, Harrison, and Ava, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
The Newman family will receive family and friends with a virtual Webcasting video memorial at moorefuneral.com as well as a service in person, at Moore Funeral Home, 1908 S. Memorial Dr., Tulsa, on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George's memory can be made to the American Red Cross or Boy Scouts of America.
