Obituary

George Allen Sawyer, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, at the age of 95 years, 3 months, and 25 days. George was born to Jessie Jewel and Bennett Sawyer on October 18, 1928. He was born in Hereford, Texas and raised in Chandler, OK, where his mom raised him and his four sisters after losing his dad at a young age.
When George was 18, he enlisted in the US Air Force. After graduation, he was stationed in Greenville, SC. He served as Staff Sergeant George Sawyer, January 1951 to August 1956, 5 years, 7 months, and 2 days (his words). He traveled to many countries, delivering supplies by air. He'd stayed longer but, after a plane crash due to lost engine, George came away with a leg injury and was hospitalized for several months.
On his birthday in 1952, he met the Love of his Life, though he didn't know it at the time. Joan and her sister were at a drive-in getting food, and he met Joan. She stuck by his side through his plane crash, and they married on December 23, 1954, in Marietta, South Carolina. She traveled all the way back to Oklahoma, not to mention she had to drive him, as his leg was still in a cast. They moved to Tulsa and raised five sons on 5th Place, and he still owns the home today; so many wonderful memories were made in that house, and still today.
George's jobs were a soda jerk, as he would say. He worked for the coffee shop and his boss trusted him to drive his nice car to make deliveries. After returning to Oklahoma from South Carolina, he got a job at the US Post Office; he was the manager at the Admiral Station where he worked and retired from there at age 55, 1982. He had 27 years' service.
He filled his retirement years, keeping busy with Joan, riding in free wheel across Oklahoma, traveling with his church, and enjoying his grandkids and great-grandkids. One of his greatest attributes was his level of commitment to those around him. He poured into family and friendship and fellowship. His family was held closest to his heart. He enjoyed sports, cars, hiking, camping, biking, collecting stamps, rock, boy scouts, girl scouts, baseball, football, He loved gardening! His whole backyard was a beautiful garden and to harvest his vegetables was a treat for everyone. He took such great pride as well as Joan. If you can call grandkids and greats a hobby, he was there for every performance, sports, Veterans' Days, Christmas programs, talent shows, recitals. Countless birthdays, holidays and wedding celebrations were celebrated in their backyard.
George spent his last 3 years at Saint Simeon's, where he enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, the ice cream parlor, VA celebrations and holiday celebrations. He was well cared for and loved by all the staff members who interacted with him. George is preceded in death by his parents, his Love of his life, married 59 years before she passed, Joan Mullinax Sawyer, his second wife, Jeannie Moon, his sisters, Trelma Sawyer, Dorothy Sawyer Beumeler and Barbara Sawyer.
