George W Stovall of Tulsa, 91, died September 7, 2023.
George was born October 22, 1931 in Springfield, Missouri. Although an only child, George was blessed with more than 30 first cousins, dozens of second cousins, and a host of childhood friends. He attended Springfield public schools and also Drury University and Missouri State University in Springfield. He later completed his formal education at the University of Tulsa.
George was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve in Springfield and in 1951 was placed on active duty. He served in Washington, D.C. and with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Upon his return from active duty with the Navy, he was employed by the Assemblies of God in Springfield.
George was united in marriage on February 10, 1952, with the former Florene Finn of Springfield, Missouri. They celebrated 67 years of marriage before her death in 2019. To this union were born four children, the first two preceding them in death at an early age.
George and his wife, Florene, moved from Springfield to Tulsa in 1955 where he accepted a position with the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association. He held various management positions with OREA and Oral Roberts University, serving as Executive Vice President until his resignation in 1985. At retirement, George continued to serve as Board Chairman of University Village Retirement Community. In 1986, George came out of retirement to become President of University Village, and served in that capacity for 27 years, completing a total of 57 years with the Oral Roberts organizations.
George was a former member of Central Assembly of God Church and First Baptist Church of Tulsa, where he taught Sunday School. He also taught Sunday school for 30 plus years at University Village. He was an avid fisherman and spent many happy days on Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas lakes and streams with family and friends; as well as fishing trips to Canada with his son, Bob (G.R.), and grandson, Brad. He also enjoyed the fellowship of a frequent round of golf with special friends.
George is survived by his son, Jim and his wife, Crystal, of Tulsa; Bob (G.R.) and his wife, Lisa, of Springfield, Missouri. Also surviving are grandchildren, Brad Stovall of Springfield; Lauren Ward and her husband, Ryan, and their son, Brooks, of Springfield, Missouri.
A memorial service will be held in The Stovall Theatre at University Village Retirement Community on September 15, 2023 at 2:30 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the University Village Trust.
